    Students are often left baffled by the process of calculating the university tuition fees to plan their study abroad finances. On navigating the study abroad university websites, you may observe that different universities present their tuition fees using varying parameters, for instance, cost per semester, cost per credit, cost per year, etc. This discrepancy may cause confusion and make it difficult for the student to calculate the total cost of abroad education.

    Let us explore the different calculation parameters through a deconstructed example of University A and University B.

    University A has outlined the cost per semester at USD$18,000 (9-12 credits) amounting to a cost of USD$36,000 per year.

    University B has specified the cost per semester at USD$27,000 (12+ credits) amounting to USD$54,000 per year.

    The critical error students make at this juncture is to simply multiply the cost per year by 2 (assuming a two-year course) to arrive at the cumulative tuition fee amount. Using this erroneous method, the tuition fee would be USD$72,000 and USD$108,000 for University A and University B, respectively.

    However, it is crucial to understand that the total cost can be accurately calculated using the cost per credit as your primary unit of calculation.

    For instance, assuming that University A is rigid in its requirement of 3 courses (i.e. 9 credits) per semester for 4 semesters, then the cost is fixed per semester and it is easy to calculate. Cost per credit is simply cost per semester divided by number of credits per semester i.e. 18000/9 = USD$2000 per credit making the total tuition fee cost at USD$72,000 (cost per credit multiplied by total number of credits).

    However, the calculation becomes slightly complex if the university is flexible on credits per semester. For instance, if University B allowed you to take 9 or 12 credits per semester, where the average cost per credit amounts to USD$2,250.

    1. Possibility One:

    You take four semesters to graduate by taking 9 credits per semester, your cost per semester amounts to USD$20,250 (cost per credit x number of credits). The total cost of education is, therefore, cost per semester multiplied by number of semesters i.e. 20250×4 = USD$81,000.

    2. Possibility Two:

    You take 3 semesters to graduate by taking 12 credits per semester, your cost per semester amounts to USD$27,000 (cost per credit x number of credits). The total cost of is, therefore, cost per semester multiplied by number of semesters i.e., 27000×3 = USD$81,000.

    Considering both the possibilities in University B, the total cost of education amounts to USD$81,000 and not the grossly overestimated figure of USD$108,000.

    It is therefore strongly recommended that one takes into consideration the cost per credit as the base unit while calculating the total university tuition fee to ensure an error free process. The ideal method to arrive at the total cost would be multiplying the total number of credits required with the cost per credit (i.e. 36×2000 for University A and 36×2250 for University B).

    Students with a three-year bachelor’s degree from India, (amounting to 15 years of total study i.e., 12+3) are often unclear about their eligibility for higher education programs in the USA and Canada. With 80 percent of the universities in the USA and Canada requiring a 16th year of study, it puts considerable limitations on options for students planning to study abroad following their B. Com, B.Sc., BAF, BMS, B.A. etc. Some universities might even require a WES or another third-party evaluation to check for equivalency with the USA/Canada degree programs.

    Considering these limitations, we need to examine the alternatives available for students with a three-year bachelor’s degree.

    • Apply to only those universities that do not require the 16thyear of study.

    However, with this option your choices are limited and many of the top schools may get ruled out. You can send an email communication to the university requesting for an exemption however, our experience has shown that their replies are often generic and vague.

    For instance, we had a student with a BMS background who wanted to apply to NYU for an MS in Marketing. The university replied to her email request by asking her to apply as they considered exceptions on a case-to-case basis. After going through the entire application process, she received a rejection because of not having the 16th year of education. Many universities would not be upfront in their communication as they earn application fees on every application received.

    • Complete a Master’s Degree in India (2 years) and then apply abroad for a second Master’s Degree.

    A Master’s degree in India like a M. Com, M. Sc, etc. will give you an added 2 years of study making you eligible for the master’s programs in the USA and Canada. This route does postpone your abroad education plans but expands your university options. Often students chose to pursue their master’s program in India via correspondence and work simultaneously to enhance their resume.

    Students would previously drop-out from their master’s program in India after completing their first year and go ahead with their higher studies plan abroad. Universities in India have therefore, become strict in their approach and provide the first year marksheet along with the second-year results, forcing students to complete their two-year program in India.

    Note: The first year marksheet is sufficient for programs in the USA, however, it will not suffice for universities in Canada which require the Master’s completion certificate.

    • Complete a One-Year Diploma program in India as your 16thyear course.

    This option will make you eligible for approximately 80% universities in the USA, however, you are still not eligible to apply to universities in Canada.

    • Apply to countries other than USA and Canada.

    You can apply to universities in countries other than USA and Canada, where the 16th year of education is not a mandatory eligibility criterion as your backup option.

    • Pursue a Diploma Program in Canada.

    A diploma program in Canada does not require you to complete 16 years of study. This is also a viable option as the diploma programs are also in high demand with lucrative post-study work prospects. This can also serve as a pathway to a future Master’s option in the country.

In the USA, STEM industries have proven to be one of the largest and potential contributors towards the country’s economy. A report by FTI Consulting revealed that STEM supports 2/3 of the US jobs (67%), 69 % of the US GDP and $2.3 trillion in annual federal tax revenue.

    Overview Of STEM OPT Extension

    STEM extensions allow international students that pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics to extend their OPT (Optical Practical Training). There are multiple benefits of availing a STEM OPT Extension, such as:

    THE STEM OPT Controversy

    In 2014, WashTech (Washington Alliance of Technology Workers), a US workers alliance, filed a court case against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that created a 2008 regulation for STEM extensions in the USA. WashTech claimed that a STEM extension would cause harm to US workers with regard to employment opportunities. Thus, they petitioned in the US court, stating that STEM OPT study programs should be considered invalid.

    To conduct an OPT, international students should follow the F1 visa rules, where they have to be enrolled in a full-time academic program at a USA university. Upon completion of their STEM degree, study abroad aspirants can pursue OPT for up to a year. But as per the 2008 STEM regulation, there had been an extension of 17 months from 12 months.

    However, the court found that the 2008 STEM regulation had ‘procedural deficiencies’ and allowed the DHS to revise the same by February 12th, 2016. Failing to do the same would result in the cancellation of STEM regulations. Thus, DHS presented an amended version of the regulation, which was approved by the US court and put to practice officially on May 10th, 2016.

    Latest Rules For STEM OPT Applications

    Since the upgraded regulation, there have been multiple STEM OPT extension application revisions for current international students to adhere to. Here are the complete details:

    1. The OPT STEM extension timeline has been changed from 17 months to 24 months.

    2. Students opting for the STEM OPT training plan and employers providing the same should complete the form I-983.

    3. There will be a self-evaluation process conducted every year during the STEM extension period.

    4. Students who exhibit two STEM degrees pursued at different academic levels and from a reputed USA institution can apply for two STEM OPT extensions.

    5. STEM extensions are conducted based on a student’s recent degree or a degree availed from a USA institution within the last 10 years and if a student is in an authorized period where they will almost complete their OPT.

    6. Students will have a maximum unemployment timeframe after filing and receiving their OPT STEM extension application. The maximum unemployment days have been extended from 120 to 150 days for 36 months OPT, and for 12 months OPT, it is 90 days.

    7. Students conducting STEM OPT job roles should be aware that the salary structure will be the same as what the local American workers will receive.

    8. Any STEM OPT extension practices should include a bona fide employer and employee relationship.

    9. DHS will have the authorization to conduct regular site visits to ensure employers are aligned with the form I-983.

    Top STEM OPT Eligibility Criteria For International Students

    Before applying to any STEM applications, there is a set of STEM OPT requirements that need to be catered to by international students. Thus, to avoid any rejection, ensure you meet all the listed criteria below:

    1. Students have been granted OPT and are currently in the valid post-completion OPT process.

    2. Students should hold a STEM degree at an undergraduate or higher academic level and seek training based on the degree pursued.

    3. Students have received their STEM degree from the current accredited SEVP-certified academic institution in the USA.

    4. Only employers that offer OPT to STEM degree students should make use of an E-Verify program.

    5. STEM degree students and employers training the former should have signed the form I-983, Training Plan for STEM OPT students.

    6. Students should submit the form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, before 90 days of their OPT employment authorization expiry and within 60 days from the date your school official entered the OPT recommendation in your SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) record. Only F1 students are eligible to apply for the STEM OPT online application for form I-765.

    7. Students who plan to enroll in a future STEM degree program are eligible to apply for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension.

    8. Students who pursued an undergraduate degree in any STEM subject but are currently enrolled in a non-STEM subject are still eligible to apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. Ensure the undergraduate STEM degree is availed from a SEVP-certified USA institution.

    How To Apply For The STEM OPT Application?

    To apply for the STEM OPT application, international students are required to file certain documents. Ensure all of the below are checked:

    1. Submission of Form I-765, which includes the correct application fee, employer’s name as listed in the E-Verify and employer E-Verify company identification number or E-Verify client company identification number. Students should file this form with USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) by paying a filing fee. Upon this, an EAD (Employment Authorization Document) will be sent by the USCIS to students.

    2. Form I-20, which includes a certificate of eligibility for non-immigrant student status. Your DSO (designated school officials) will issue this certificate within 60 days.

    3. Copy of your STEM degree

    Post-Submitting STEM OPT Extension Requirements

    Once you complete the above-listed process, you will receive your STEM OPT extension. Post this, there are certain checklists you should adhere to, such as:

    1. You need to report any changes made as per the list below to your DSO within a time frame of 10 days

    • Your residential or mailing address
    • Your email address
    • Your employer’s name and address

    Students receive the TOEFL score reports within two weeks, and IELTS score reports after 13 calendar days. In the case of PTE, students receive their results online in five days.
