  • How to Plan Your Finances for a Canada Study Permit Application

When it comes to preparing for higher studies in Canada, a study permit is the most important document you need to obtain. However, this entails detailed financial planning, which ensures your stay and transition into the country is smooth and without any hiccups.

Thus, if you’ve received admission to your dream institute in Canada, you should now begin your financial preparation without delay.

It’s vital that you plan-ahead and secure adequate funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses throughout each year of your course in Canada. Without careful planning, financial difficulties may arise during your stay, potentially impacting your ability to focus on your studies or even hindering your course completion.

In this blog, we cover different aspects of financial planning that are required for you to pursue graduate education in Canada.

When Should I Start My Financial Planning for Canada-based Education

Initiate financial planning early (up to 1 year in advance) to gather necessary documents and funds for your Canada student visa application. This would help in preventing last-minute stress.

To begin with, you need to do the following:

    • Research expenses and create a budget in advance.
    • Open a dedicated savings account and seek financial advice to make informed decisions. This is especially important if you only have accounts in co-operative banks/small finance banks/non-banking finance companies (NBFCs). Such bank accounts are not acceptable while applying for Canada study permit. Thus, you should open this new savings account with a nationalized or private bank.

When starting your financial planning for a Canadian visa application, the first step is determining the suitable category for your visa application.

Canada provides two distinct categories for visa applicants – SDS and Non-SDS Category

    • 1. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) offers faster processing for applicants from specific countries who meet the following criteria:
    • IELTS score should not be less than 6.0 in any of the four modules and more than 6.5 overall.
    • Student has paid the first-year tuition fee
    • We recommend this category since the visa acceptances rate in this category are much higher than the non-SDS category.

If you do not meet the above criteria, you will have to apply through the non-SDS route, which is a conventional visa route for studying in Canada and has different requirements and longer processing times.

Financial Planning for Canadian Visa Applications

Biometric and visa application fees are CAD 235.

The financial requirements vary based on your individual circumstances and the type of visa application you’re pursuing, whether through SDS or Non-SDS.

For SDS applicants, specific financial documents and actions are recommended:

    • Paying the first-year fees and obtaining a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of CAD 20,635 which covers your living expenses.
    • For the second year, demonstrate funds for tuition fees and living expenses (@CAD 20,635 per year depending on program duration – this figure is as per the IRCC, but may vary depending on the lifestyle).
    • Arranging funds for tuition and living expenses. (Students should consider expenses like rent, utilities, groceries, dining, transportation, and personal costs. Researching the cost of living in your study city can provide insight into potential expenses.)
    • Consulting with financial institutions for GIC and compliance.
    • Organizing financial documents and creating a budget plan.

    Financial planning For NON-SDS Category

As against the rules for SDS applications, non-SDS applicants must demonstrate liquid assets to cover at least the first year as well as second year. Acceptable liquid assets are:

    • Savings
    • Fixed deposits (FDs)
    • GIC of CAD 20,635
    • Education loan.

For showing the minimum fund requirements, a non-SDS applicant can use a combination of any of above four mentioned liquid assets (GIC being compulsory). Apart from these, a non-SDS applicant may use PF, Insurance, mutual funds, and other liquid assets to show additional amount funds over and above the minimum requirements.

For SDS Year 1 and NON-SDS Year 1-2 visa categories for Canada, you’ll need to demonstrate:

    i. Primary funding sources:

    • Savings Account
    • Fixed deposits (FD)
    • Education Loan (Ensure that your loan amount adequately covers tuition fees, living expenses, and any other associated costs throughout your study program.)

    ii. Backup funds:

    • Other liquid assets for contingency.

Sponsorship Requirements for Canadian Visa Application

Only you and your parents can be sponsors. You will need an ‘Affidavit of Support’ from your parents.

If you are planning to show an educational loan, then you need to compulsorily submit Income Tax Returns (ITR) of your sponsors (which may include you). We recommend that the total annual income of all your sponsors should be Rs. 12 lakhs at least.

    Collegepond Financial Advisory Services-

Again, if the amount of funds that you can show falls short, you can approach the Collegepond Financial Team for advice on how you can display the required funds in an acceptable way.

Please note that this advice is provided bespoke after we evaluate your case.

What should I ensure when I gather the above supporting financial documents?

There are a few things that you must bear in mind while you collect the requisite proof of financial funds:

    • Financial documents should be recent, genuine, and in English or accompanied by certified translations.
    • Statements should include the account holder’s name, account balance, currency, date, and bank seal or stamp.
    • It is advisable that you show that you hold these funds with reputable financial institutions (for instance, it is preferable that you show savings account or term deposits with nationalized banks as opposed to cooperative banks)

Also, remember there are many scholarships available for study abroad aspirants (aside from those offered by universities). We have helped several of our students in securing such scholarships that can substantially reduce the financial burden of your education on your family.

If you wish to know about the different types of educational loans that you can avail of, you may refer to our write-up on education loans for foreign education.

Banking Advisory for Students Securing a Study Permit in Canada

    • Open a Canadian bank account to streamline financial management.
    • Conduct research on various banks, comparing services and fees to make an informed decision.
    • Explore reliable and cost-effective methods for currency exchange from your home currency to Canadian dollars.
    • Investigate debit and credit card options offered by Canadian banks as convenient alternatives to cash.
    • Prioritize effective debt management strategies when using credit cards.

Once you have done the above, ensure that you have an emergency fund in place for unforeseen expenses like medical emergencies or unexpected travel needs. Dedicate a portion of your budget to safeguard your education against unexpected expenses.

  • How to write a convincing SOP for Masters in Architecture

If you’re planning to apply for a master’s program in Architecture, there’s a few things you’ll need to know about how your application will be assessed.

Firstly, even though they may be required, your standardized test scores will not have as much weightage when it comes to deciding whether you receive or not. That isn’t to say that you can afford to submit a really bad GRE or TOEFL score, but let’s say, you don’t necessarily need a 325/340 on the GRE.

Secondly, (easy to guess this but) your academic score definitely does matter.

But most importantly, your application will very much hinge on two aspects:

    • Your Statement of Purpose
    • Your Portfolio

And in this article, we focus on the first aspect, i.e. how to write a Statement of Purpose for applying to a Masters in Architecture program.

What should you focus on in your Masters in Architecture SOP?

Before we specifically look into this, it is important that you have a thorough understanding of the different ingredients that an SOP should have in general. And we’d recommend you to The Ultimate Guide to Drafting a Stellar Statement of Purpose where we have covered the topic extensively.

    Sample 1:

The first example is of a candidate applied to the State University of New York Buffalo.

“As an architect, you design for the present, with an awareness of the past for a future which is essentially unknown” – Norman Foster

As an aspiring architect, I have always been fascinated by the magnanimity and sheer massiveness, which is only reflective of the architectural expertise that must have gone into designing them, of Egyptian pyramids, Greek temples, and European Gothic cathedrals. When I pass by many modern skyscrapers across the city, I can see how architecture has evolved significantly over time. Despite this evolution, which reflects the changing cultural, technological, and social contexts our times today, what has remained constant is a consideration for creating not just aesthetically appealing but also functional structures. My fascination with architecture propelled me to seek hands on exposure through professional experiences; the most notable of which is my work at Alliance City Developers and Realtors Pvt. Ltd. as their in-house architect for residential redevelopment projects in Mumbai.

Here, I worked on detailed drawings and sections of three multi-storeyed residential apartments with recreational facilities. I worked on designing and executing their main entrance lobbies, common areas, the main gate, facades, and flats. Besides these, I managed project coordination with consultants, met with site personnel, and supervised all the ongoing projects. For the luxury apartments, I designed their elaborate lobbies, terrace gardens, gymnasiums, landscapes, interiors, and many more ancillary aspects that go into making a house a home. I’ve created designs using sketches and experimenting various forms and materials on software such as Revit, Enscape, Sketchup and worked on presentational works for better understanding of space designing. In addition, I ensured the use of ergonomics while creating and designing these spaces, from drawings to material selection, vendor management, timelines, and executing the site work.

This professional exposure has been pivotal in motivating me to pursue my Master’s in Architecture to enable me with a gratifying career in leading and managing large projects ahead. After graduating, I aspire to work as the Team Lead of Design departments in companies such as Foster + Partners, SOM, and Zaha Hadid Architects, reputed for their work in projects for innovative design, use of new technology, and sustainability. Here, I would like to be responsible for handling the design and management of various commercial and residential projects, helping coordinate with clients and consultants, and exploring new sustainability technologies. Later, with significant work expertise to back me up, I want to take on leadership roles in companies like Bjake Ingles Group and Foster + Partners, where I would collaboratively work with my team of Architects and Construction Engineers to drive sustainable design projects for a large clientele.

My Bachelor’s in Architecture education proved decisive in defining my career interests and helping me develop a solid conceptual knowledge base. The curriculum included subjects like architectural design, rendering and detailing (ARD), and Allied design – interiors & landscape. Subjects like the theory of structures and Architectural building construction management (ABCM) helped me understand the building and loads of structures. Also, I took electives on software applications used in architecture. Furthermore, I went on industrial visits to Pune, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh, where I documented historic and cultural spaces keeping in mind their impact on the environment, understanding the town they were built in and its climate, and the materials used. One such documentation was titled “Divine waters,” a study of heritage temples at Lonar, Aurangabadh. Here, I have drafted and presented detailed drawings of heritage temples in Lonar, Aurangabad. Through seminars on _______________, I learned about global practices of design.

Over the ten semesters of my undergrad, I worked on numerous hands-on design and allied projects. The semesters included projects starting from a bungalow design on a 600sq.m plot and then escalating to a design institute at the scale of a 45,000sq.m plot, which I chose for my thesis. I explored various projects like bungalows, exhibition spaces, motels, cultural centers, healthcare resorts, hotel management institutes, mass housing- a residential project, a convention center, and Design Academy. With research on user behavior and ergonomics, I would develop a zoning map for the structures and plan them while working on their external façade. My elective subjects allowed me to learn several 3d software such as SketchUp, Revit, rhino, and even 3ds max. I implemented these software skills for rendering my design projects. Allied projects included the Interior design of a commercial restaurant and a residential 3-bhk house with detailed work. For allied design, the process went on from creating a mood board to developing a design from materials and patterns to further zoning areas and diagrams.

Each design had detailed working drawings of each section and legends for the type of material used and the finished product. Civil layouts, Plumbing, Electrical, furniture, lighting – every aspect was given attention to detail. These projects start with simple sketches, turning them into beautifully hand-rendered projects. Other subjects included working drawings–detailed drawings regarding government rules and building construction.

For valuable industry-specific exposure, I interned at Architect Hafeez Contractor (AHC). I worked on several BIM projects using Revit. I worked on residential mass housing structures for CIDCO’s Navi Mumbai projects. My job was to create detailed working drawings for the structure as per GFC’s, analyze data, and create detailed design elements like windows and doors, the thickness of even plaster levels, and incorporate them into the structure. While working at AHC, I also attended seminars and visited hands-on exhibitions like ACE TECH to learn more about the field. Also, I worked on their Municipal drawings. In a subsequent internship, Pendse Yash architecture + design, I learned to work on several software applications for renders. The ongoing projects include a bungalow and a bunch of interior projects. I was assigned site supervision, wherein I would directly contact the vendors and the workers at the site for details about the designs for a smooth workflow. I also made presentational drawings for several ongoing and upcoming projects. Alongside working in-house, I also got to collaborate with other architects and their studios for social projects like the ‘pod design: animal shelter for strays.’ My work also included creating a bill of quantities, a market survey, and constant ergonomic studies to learn about space user behaviors.

In addition to channeling my focus on meeting my undergrad objectives, I reserved time to engage in extracurricular activities. I have organized and participated in the annual college events for five years and various seminars and workshops. I was a part of the design team from my first year and later led the team as their design secretary in the last two years of academics. I attended exhibitions such as ACE Tech: An annual hands-on exhibition for people from the construction industry to network about materials. Also, I completed a course in Parametric architecture: generative and fluidic design specializing in various computing design strategies using Rhino, Maya and keyshot. Also, I attended a seminar hosted by ISRO on Geospatial inputs for enabling master plan formulation under AMRUT sub-scheme – an outreach program. Furthermore, I participated in a Women’s Pavilion by volume zero competition, which aimed to create a space that would encourage and support women worldwide by creating awareness about crimes and issues. My interest in animation led me to learn software applications such as 3ds max and Blender for motion graphic designing. These engagements enhanced my creativity, leadership, teamwork, and management skills.

With the extensive learning I gained through my professional stints, I now wish to advance my knowledge through M.Arch from __________. The courses, including ___________, ____________, and ___________, will help prepare me for a rewarding career ahead. It will be an honor to learn from renowned professors such as Prof ___________, whose work in ___________ is truly exemplary. I also wish to proactively contribute to the design field and sustainability committees and participate in diverse extracurricular activities.

I am an inquisitive architect, passionate about designing spaces. I believe my strong determination, good communication skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving mindset qualify me as the perfect candidate for this graduate program. To this end, I hope my candidature is given due consideration, and I am granted a place in the Class of 2023.

    Sample 2:

In this case, the student here was applying for Carnegie Mellon University’s Masters in Architecture and Urban Design.

I am the granddaughter of a Kashmiri pandit who fled from her home as a seven-year-old, in the era immediately preceding the Partition of India. A lazy afternoon activity during my childhood that my mother and I engaged in was to attempt to reconstruct my grandmother’s house in Srinagar using a Lego set, based on her anecdotes alone. We would strive to capture details such as the front steps, the large balcony, and the bedrooms with thick timber walls that managed to withstand harsh Kashmiri winters. This was my first foray into any form of design but witnessing the imprint that spaces and homes left on people’s minds struck a chord within me. During my teens, I would photograph spatial elements during vacations and try to recreate them in Lego; delighting in the forms that took shape out of toy modules. As a student in the Science stream who yearned to express her creativity, discovering that architecture lay at the confluence of science and art deepened my interest in the field.

After I graduate, I aim to work as an architect and designer and contribute to the art and science of spatial design. The ongoing discourse in architecture has inspired me to bring my knowledge of the Indian disciplines of vernacular, climate-responsive, and resilient design to a more global platform. I wish to seek opportunities to integrate a human-centric approach to design with technology, culminating in forms at the scale of the building and neighbourhood that cater to user requirements.   Post acquiring substantial work experience, I aspire to attain a leadership position at a design firm. I also hope to utilize my long-standing passion for writing to be a voice for responsible, people-centric design in the architectural community.

My initial fascination for architecture into translated into my Bachelor’s degree in Architecture. My curriculum comprised a wide array of subjects, culminating in an Architectural Design project at the end of every semester and a Design Dissertation in my final year. I secured a gold medal in my first year. In the following years, I have consistently been within the first five ranks in my batch, securing the top rank in the subjects of Construction and Design in different semesters.

My interest and participation in workshops gave me a critical prism to observe the current architectural trends in the field. I enrolled in TU Delft’s “Rethinking the City” course on edX, which focused on resilient cities. I attended lectures and exhibitions by leading architects such as Brinda Somaya, Swedish architect Rahel Belatchew (Swedish Style Mumbai), and Sameep Pandora (deCoding Mumbai: a study of the City’s Building Codes), to name a few.

My design dissertation in the final year stemmed from learning about the role of architecture and planning in my city. In 2014, the Mumbai Port Trust Land Development Committee (MPTLDC) published a draft proposal to redevelop the Eastern Waterfront (EWF) of Mumbai, an 1800-acre stretch of land along the east coast of the financial capital of India. This area houses ports, defunct mills, and supporting institutions that directly contributed to Mumbai’s growth in the 1800s. The original document proposed the adaptive reuse of existing structures, but subsequent proposals envisioned the land as a blank slate devoid of any history, primed for real estate development. My thesis aimed to understand the relationship between Mumbai’s industrial past and the locals via interviews and literature reviews. It attempted to recognize and conserve the industrial heritage of the area and design interventions that allow these structures to serve modern requirements, thereby reintegrating them with the urban fabric of the city. This process involved extensive documentation in person via AutoCAD and BIM software. I conducted case studies of similar instances of post-industrial precincts. The design proposal delineated ways to conserve and reintegrate certain industrial precincts within the redevelopment plan. The dissertation’s methodology, research, and the final design concept, along with the fact that it added to the ongoing discussion surrounding the EWF lands in Mumbai’s architectural circles, was praised by jurors.

I undertook a 6-month internship with a design studio called Tropic Responses, located in Bangalore, India. This firm focused on residential and institutional projects, emphasizing local styles of architecture and minimizing the carbon footprints of buildings. My role was to conceptualize architectural and interior design elements via sketches and SketchUp 3D. Post this, I would produce detailed technical AutoCAD drawings for construction. I also took the initiative to write articles for the studio’s website, which were published. This experience taught me the practicalities of the profession, such as executing ambitious designs with budgetary restrictions and integrating vernacular designs with a modern flair. At a personal level, I learned how to work independently and efficiently with time constraints and design collaboratively with people at different levels of the hierarchy.

Marrying my interest in architecture with my childhood passion for writing led me to try my hand at an architectural journalism internship with a premiere magazine, Architect and Interiors India, during my summer vacation in 2019. During the month I spent there, I authored several articles for the magazine’s website and print issue. I learned about market trends, upcoming technology, and materials. I had the opportunity to interact with some of India’s top architects and attend seminars. The experience made me realize how crucial it is to stay current on new technological developments and how useful that information is in implementing smart designs into execution.

My current association with Morphogenesis, a pan-Indian architecture firm, has expanded my horizons further. In the past three months, I have worked on ideating luxury interiors for commercial projects and creating tender drawings. Once I was assigned a specific project, I created the entire set of technical drawings required by the landscape team and other consultants. In the second month, I was allocated the responsibility of coordinating with the associated consultants and handling the workings independently in the absence of my seniors. I received consistently positive feedback during my probation reviews with the Director and Team Leader, maintaining a rating of 3.6/4.

To foster holistic development, I have been equally involved in extracurricular activities. In my second and third years of college, I was part of the Core Team for the batch exhibitions post our annual architectural study trips. The role consisted of overseeing initial documentation and working with our batch of 80 students over 2-3 months each year to ensure standardization in the accuracy, completion, and aesthetic of the final drawings. We would coordinate with faculty to finalize the logistics of the exhibition, and introduce the exhibition to dignitaries, college trustees, and practicing architects. These experiences honed my leadership skills and taught me how to delegate tasks to maximize efficiency while managing coursework.

At this point, seeking a platform that will help me attain my career goals, I wish to be part of the Urban Design program at the ____________. __________’s participation in the ___________, which allows students across different disciplines to conceive design proposals as a team, struck me as a unique initiative and as great opportunity for collaborative learning. I look forward to learning about sustainable cities and communities from luminaries who have dedicated their careers to the pursuit of the same, such as Professors __________ and ___________. The electives about __________ and _____________ to address realistic challenges such as disaster resilience in cities, transport infrastructure, urban housing greatly appealed to me since they are applicable in urban contexts globally. Having read some of the publications on ___________’s website (namely, ______________), I would be delighted to contribute to similar, research-driven articles.

Being raised in the vibrant metropolis of Mumbai has allowed me to meet with people from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds. I would relish the opportunity to contribute my nuanced understanding of cultures to a multicultural architectural platform. My inherent love for writing and research has consistently led me to seek out opportunities for the same and I will continue to contribute to ongoing academic and research initiatives at the university while aspiring to enhance the academic fabric of the university.

  • How to write a SOP for Business Analytics programs?

Business Analytics is one of the most in-demand fields, as businesses look to move away from traditional ways of operating to more technology and analytics driven ones.

One of the unique aspects of the field is the fact that it is applicable in every industry, which means business analytics programs attract students from a wide variety of backgrounds. Of course, a majority of them are engineers, but over the years, we have had students belong to even commerce and business management backgrounds successfully secure admits into business analytics graduate programs. One example that stands out in this regard is that of a student who had an architecture undergrad and a couple of years working in her family realty firm.

So, what could convince the Admissions Committee members to grant admits to such students (who seemingly came from altogether unrelated backgrounds)?

It’s their purpose, or intent, or motivation behind wanting to study business analytics.

And there’s only one place in your entire application where you can express this intent or motivation, and that is in your Statement of Purpose

By now, you’d have easily figured out why the SOP is such an important document for your application to business analytics programs.

And this article covers how to write a convincing Statement of Purpose for business analytics.

How to write a stellar Masters in Business Analytics SOP?

If you focus on the term ‘Business Analytics’, it becomes obvious that you need to showcase two sets of skills through your SOP:

    • Business (Resource Management, Team Leadership, Project Planning, etc.)
    • Analytics (Decision-making using data)

And finally, we present a couple of Business Analytics SOP samples. Both students applied to a program in Business Analytics, and brought with them varying profiles – one of them had relevant experience in the form of an internship and the other through an undergrad project. It is because of the differences in their profiles that their SOPs were structured in their own unique ways.

    Sample 1

This is the example of a student who successfully applied for an MS in Business Analytics at Columbia University.

’Data! Data! Data! I can’t make bricks without clay!’.

Sherlock Holmes’ exasperated expression of the significance of data is testament to its essentiality in our modern world. While Mr. Holmes was referring to data wile solving a case, it goes without saying that, in the context of the business sector of today, every problem needs pertinent data-based interpretation and solution. I have gained cognizance of this very fact while working on several college projects.

One of these, a research project under my college professor, was on on website domain classification. I formulated SMART questions, created a dataset with URLs and their domains in a MySQL database, integrated and customized other useful databases with my own, and used queries to process data. The Linear SVM approach was chosen to classify websites under a domain and the model was run on the data sheets to give an output of 99.89% and 98.6% accuracy using RFCs and Linear SVCs respectively. We presented and published the paper under the 5th IEEE-International Conference on Advances in Science and Technology (ICAST)-2022.

Another project engagement of mine was inspired by the difficulty my mother faced who, being an excellent cook, would often find it difficult to think of new dishes to create with the ingredients on hand. Creating this __________ project, my work included crawling local Indian recipe websites using Selenium, storing raw recipe data in spreadsheets, and using the Google Translate API to translate recipes from local languages to English. I used libraries such as Pandas in Jupyter notebooks to clean, organize and format data to JSON input to feed a genetic algorithm-based model and selected key data points for model functioning. I also gathered the final analysis of customer responses to an extensive survey I designed and converted the findings to visual charts. We faced various challenges pertaining to system characteristics, version compatibility, erroneous library dependency paths, and inconsistent module referencing which we overcame by automating both rollbacks to compatible program versions and correct path and module reference. We finally presented the paper at the IEEE International Conference on Trends in Quantum Computing & Emerging Business Technologies (TQCEBT 2022) and published it in IEEE Xplore.

While my diverse experiences thus far have exposed me to the significance of data collection, data mining, and analytics to improve and grow businesses, it has also deeply motivated me to pursue higher domain erudition toward a prosperous career ahead. To accomplish this, I wish to pursue my Master’s in Business Analytics/Information Systems. After graduating, I aspire to work as a business/data analyst in managerial or leadership positions in firms like Netflix, Google, Amazon, Disney, etc. I want to be a part of revolutionary projects that use data to identify trends and patterns and develop pertinent strategies. I would strive to provide intelligent data solutions and decisions on challenging issues using tools like Excel, Tableau, Looker, SQL, Power BI, Cloud, etc, to increase sales, customer satisfaction, and build consumer loyalty toward company products. In the long run, I wish to be a leading figure as a director of creative business intelligence in the aforementioned companies and be involved in __________.

My dexterous performance in my projects and employment was possible due to the solid knowledge base from my IT engineering undergraduate studies, which also laid the foundation to graduate school. Being exposed to an eclectic selection of fundamental courses in the field of Data Analytics and Business, like Exploratory Data Analysis, Data Analysis using R programming and Python, Advanced Databases, Entrepreneurship, and Cloud Computing, helped me understand how they can be used in combination to provide solutions to business problems. I explored related tools and carried out research in the form of case studies and capstone projects. A consistent top performer, ranking amongst the top 5 students, I took the initiative to enhance my skills by garnering various certifications such as the Amazon AWS, Google Project Management, Google and IBM Data Analytics professional certifications, and Accenture’s AI Ascend Program in AI & Big Data Analytics. In addition, I attended notable seminars like the Microsoft Student Ambassador Summits as an active Student Ambassador, Google Developer and Women Techmakers Meets as a team member, and IEEE Conferences, where I presented my research papers and networked with industry experts.

Furthermore, to gain industry exposure, I interned at “Teach for India” in “The Bookworm Society” subsidy, which helped instill the habit of reading among underprivileged children. I collected and analyzed data to formulate effective marketing strategies to help increase reach of the subdivision. I also participated in designing the content for social media engagement according to my findings. I worked with spreadsheets and visualization tools to analyze business data and present findings to the department head. Upon completion of the internship, I received a letter of appreciation from the organization for my efforts. This exposure polished my data-driven decision-making skills.

I also worked as a student intern as part of a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay and Microsoft Gold. I was trained in Azure Cloud Computing to create and deploy a WordPress website managed from an Azure Virtual Machine environment. This exposed me to common problems faced in said software fields, contributed to cloud solutions, and enhanced my technical problem-solving skills.

My exposure to analytics also includes my current employment. As a Sub-Editor and Analyst at Kidadl, an edutainment platform for parents and kids. I oversee the management of writers, provide them with feedback from outcomes of data analysis performed on the content published online and modify articles to conform with SEO optimization, findings of patterns that fit the booming trends in target readership, and company guidelines. With my diligent and driven work ethics, I managed to improve the quality of published content on the website and was awarded ‘Best Employee’ during the initial period of my employment.

Besides academia, my passion for leading has led me to participate in several extracurriculars. Being a Microsoft Student Partner, I created and led many teams to conduct day-long workshops. I was also affiliated with the Computer Society of India as a core council member in the Student Chapter of my institution. I have also worked with the Terry Fox Cancer Foundation to raise funds for cancer patients. I have participated in multiple Model United Nations as a delegate. On the cultural side, I completed the 7-year Bharatnatyam Indian cultural dance course, passing all examinations top of the class. My interest in sports led me to participate and win in several state-wide chess tournaments. This way, I developed an affinity for creativity and strategic thinking. My communication skills, teamwork, and drive to give back to society were also strengthened through these participations.

After such enriching technical experiences, I believe it is the opportune time for me to pursue my graduate studies in MS in in Business Analytics from ____________. Sample 2

This is a student who secured admission into the Master of Science in Business Analytics program at Carnegie Mellon University.

Being an avid fan of the show “Shark Tank,” I read a lot of articles about entrepreneurs’ journeys and watched interviews with Mark Cuban and Kevin O’Leary, two of my favourite entrepreneurs on the show. Mark Cuban emphasised how analytics and AI were the future of all business models and stated how he used data to give his basketball team, “The Mavericks” a competitive edge. A similar sentiment was expressed by Kevin O’Leary, who claimed that Tesla is more of a data company than a car company due to its focus on using acquired data to further the field of automated vehicle development. The fact that copious data is being utilized by all business lines made me realize that information is currently the most valuable and interesting commodity we have ever had. My interest in studying how businesses may utilize data and analytics to improve their decision-making was sparked by my passion for business and entrepreneurship.

My first step on the journey of learning was an internship with Axis Bank Limited as a Business Analyst. I worked with their Business Intelligence Unit on the “Personalisation Project”. While maintaining various databases, I performed data analysis and data visualization to glean helpful insights from the data. I learned PySpark, SQL, Hive, Microsoft Excel and Python. My journey, from using handwritten rules and ratios for segmenting customers to optimising the process using machine learning algorithms like the K-means clustering algorithm introduced me to the power of Artificial Intelligence in the business world. Based on customer segmentation, I ideated and created different personas and created reports with detailed storyboarding and in-depth data on customers. This helped our advertisement, marketing, and web development teams to develop campaigns and strategies and modify their application to attract and retain customers by providing personalised communications and offers to them. Collaborating with cross-functional teams on a daily basis for ideating and reporting taught me the fundamentals of effective communication and teamwork in the industry.

Another internship as a Data Analyst and Research Intern at ENGRAV Aviation Services and Systems gave me insights into the practical applications of data and programming. Using Python and Java I performed software testing on their proprietary cloud-based ERP software called EMQIM-FTDL and provided insights to optimise the process, thus reducing overhead costs and enhancing business efficiency.

To further improve my knowledge of Business Analytics, I am pursuing an Online Certification course, “Integrated Program in Business Analytics” at the prestigious University of IIM Indore which gives me exposure to the fundamentals of statistics, computer programming, and machine learning using Python, R programming and various other technologies. This has stimulated my interest in data applications and business analysis and fuelled my desire to delve deeper into its various facets through a master’s graduate program.

The robust foundations laid during my undergraduate studies enabled the successful implementation of the aforementioned endeavors. My interest in data science was piqued by studying various courses such as Data Warehousing and Mining, Database Management Systems, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, Deep Learning, Web Development, Discrete and Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Data Structures and Algorithms and many more. Many classes were held in virtual mode during Covid times and this offered me the opportunity to sign up for several online courses on platforms such as Udemy, Coursera, and YouTube on Data Science and Programming, User Experience, and Digital Marketing.

During my undergraduate degree, I worked on a “Sentiment Analysis” project, in which we created a model using BERT and Hugging Face to predict the sentiments of a given input extracted from social media platforms. We achieved a test accuracy of 92% using a Twitter dataset. My final year project, “Virtual Assistant,” aimed to assist people with various disabilities by using voice commands. The inspiration for this project came from my interactions with people with various disabilities. I conducted extensive research in the fields of automatic speech recognition, natural language processing, deep learning and neural networks. We used Python, RASA, and ASR to create an interactive interface that could perform simple functions such as sending emails, playing media files and performing analysis on datasets by simply using voice commands. We also added a face lock security feature using CNN.

Furthermore, I worked on other projects such as an “online job portal” and “online grocery application”. They introduced me to the fundamentals of human psychology, stakeholder involvement, design thinking and user experience design. My department commended me for creating interfaces for these projects. Being a zesty football fan, I worked on an independent football analytics project that made me cognizant of the power of analytics in sports.

In addition to coursework, I actively participated in extracurricular activities. As the President of the Rotaract Club of my college, I headed a team of 150 volunteers and organized various team-building events including an online International Model United Nations with more than 250 participants worldwide. In addition, I co-founded a mental health awareness club on campus, taught Mathematics and English to underprivileged kids and organized other fundraiser events. Opportunities for cultural and athletic engagement during college days were crucial for my holistic personality development. While my team won the inter-department dance competition, I also captained the college soccer team and we were runners-up in the football tournament. Participating in all these events has contributed to the development of my communication, marketing, team-building, and leadership skills and attests to my multi-tasking abilities.

I’ve come to appreciate Peter Sondergaard’s vision, encapsulated by the phrase “Information is the oil in the twenty-first century, and analytics is the combustion engine,” which emphasizes on the importance of developing innovative business models based on actionable data-driven insights as the primary strategy for gaining a competitive advantage. I aspire to work as a project manager in the near future. In this role, I wish to assess the company’s functional and technical requirements, develop business strategies, manage stakeholder satisfaction, and be involved in budgeting and forecasting to increase the organization’s competitiveness in the modern business world. In a world where consumer satisfaction is the key to thriving, I aspire to leverage the knowledge gained in business analytics, marketing analytics, customer analytics, and user experience to launch a business consultancy. I intend to assist small-scale firms in capitalizing on the booming online industry by equipping them with effective branding, product, and marketing strategies and empowering them to make data-driven decisions.

I believe that pursuing a Master of Science in Business Analytics degree at the ____________ is next logical step toward achieving my career objectives. Courses in ___________, ____________, and ____________ will equip me with the knowledge and tools to assist businesses in making better use of their internal resources, developing pricing strategies, and marketing their products to outperform their competitors. Studying electives like ______________ will assist me in achieving my long-term goal of launching a consulting firm by educating me on various methods of customer acquisition and relationship building. I wish to study under tutelage of ____________ as well as Professor ____________, whose extensive work in _____________ inspires me. Being an avid soccer fan, I was delighted to learn about the collaboration between ____________ and ____________, where they developed a leadership program for business professionals focusing on the global sports industry. I would love to work with the _____________ and have access to the resources to conduct my own research in the entertainment and media industries.

To conclude, my technical acumen, combined with my tenacity, dynamism and eagerness to learn new things shall make me a valuable addition to the program. I hope the Admissions Committee finds my candidature worthy of a positive response.

  • Job Description of a Business Analyst Abroad [A look at 20 Job Adverts by Top Companies]

A look at business analyst job descriptions to understand the responsibilities you may handle after landing one of the most coveted job roles of our times
This topic will be easy to discuss once we clarify a few things related to the meaning of three words –

    1. Analytics
    2. Analysis
    3. Analyst

But…. don’t they mean the same?? Afterall, they look so similar!
It isn’t surprising if you’re surprised that we begin this blog by a description of words that you might have used casually in regular conversations. But here we go:

    • Analytics refers to the systematic computational analysis of data. It involves using statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms to identify trends and patterns in data. Essentially, analytics is purely computation-driven. When these approaches are used for business use-cases, we call it Business Analytics.
    • Analysis is the detailed examination of the elements or structure of something. Analysis may or may not involve analytics, and at times, some analysis may rely purely on human assessment. Thus, analytics for the most part would throw up results that look black and white, but then, a human manager might look at them, or ‘analyse’ them, to interpret the underlying shades of grey.
    • Analyst is the professional who performs analysis. Remember, analysis and not merely analytics.

Thus, a Business Analyst would be an expert who evaluates business processes, identifies needs, and proposes solutions to help an organization achieve its goals. For this purpose, the Business Analyst may adopt the use of Business Analytics, or may need to use non-analytics-based approaches depending on business requirements.

With that being said, let us now look at a few Job Descriptions for the role of a Business Analyst and what responsibilities the role encompasses.

For this, what we have done is we have obtained snippets of ‘Responsibilities’ from actual Job Descriptions showcased by different companies on Indeed.com. This will allow you to understand the practical expectations that a Business Analyst has to deliver on while on the job.

Practically speaking, Business Analysts typically focus on 3 aspects:

    • Technology
    • Analytics
    • Business Processes

The third aspect, i.e. processes, are often sought to be controlled through the first two, and Business Analysts focus on managing those aspects so as to establish processes that yield favorable business outcomes.

While going through the above job descriptions, you may have observed a significant overlap between the responsibilities involved. However, at times, it may be important to fill the requirement of a Business Analyst with a professional who along with the ability to handle such responsibilities may also bring in expertise specific to a certain business. The following is an example of such a job position:

What is Germany’s Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)?

While the German education and training system is world-renowned, the Opportunity Card (also known as Chancenkarte) introduced by the government of Germany, effective June 1, 2024, is designed to simplify the relocation and employment process for foreign graduates and skilled professionals.

It would serve as an attractive and easy option for the following two categories of applicants to live and seek employment in Germany:

    • Non-EU professionals can relocate to Germany for a year to explore employment opportunities after qualifying through a point based system
    • Students pursuing graduate studies in Germany are eligible to apply for the card directly without the need for going through the point based system. They can live back in Germany for a period of 18 months and search for jobs after completing their graduation

By obtaining this card, you gain the right to reside and qualify for employment in Germany. The card offers the possibility of working at some of Germany’s globally renowned industries from the automotive and IT sector to healthcare and pharma industries . This, in turn, sets the stage for moving into Germany permanently on the back of a promising and fulfilling career path

What is the Purpose of the German Opportunity Card?

While Germany ranks high in terms of innovation and high-quality industrial exports, there is an increasing reliance on immigration talent in bottleneck professions—fields where the demand for expertise surpasses the supply. These critical professions include engineering healthcare, IT, automotive industry and sustainable engineering.

Most of these in-demand roles are concentrated in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines where there is an acute talent gap. The purpose of launching the Opportunity Card is to attract foreign talent to fill the need gap  in crucial sectors such as research and development, engineering, information technology, and healthcare. , ensuring that Germany continues to thrive and innovate.

You can qualify for the visa on the basis of foreign qualifications (degrees acquired in your home country). It is not mandatory to have German qualifications. However, graduating from a German university can significantly boost your chances of acquiring the card.

The card facilitates easy and fast legal entry into Germany through expedited approval, offering direct access to the German job market in addition to qualifying for permanent residency in Germany. In essence, the Opportunity Card serves as gateway to broaden your future prospects.

Though there is an increasing demand for the card, there is no cap on the Opportunity Card as on date. However, the government may set a cap if there is an excessive demand for the Opportunity Card in the future.

Here is a quick comparison of the Opportunity Card with Other Work Visas

  • Avoid Common Passport Naming Convention Mistakes When Aspiring to Study Abroad

    Table of Content

A valid passport and a visa are two essential documents you will need while traveling abroad – whether it is for work, studies, or leisure purposes. If you are an overseas education aspirant, you need to take a closer look at the front and back pages of your passport. You have to do this diligently because the information on these pages will be referred to and replicated as-is to populate crucial documents across various stages of your study abroad journey.

More importantly, your passport will be the most important document determining your eligibility for the following:

    • To appear for competitive and language proficiency tests such as the GRE and TOEFL, respectively, at designated centers.
    • To attend the visa interview and procure the student visa after securing admission to a foreign university.
    • Finally, to travel to your desired study abroad destination.

What You Need to Check on the Front Page of Your Passport?

These two fields may seem like the easiest thing to fill when you apply for a passport.

Surname                                          :   This is your family name or the last name

Given Names                                :    This is your name followed by your father’s name

However, how you fill the two fields will impact your entire study abroad journey right from the application and student visa processing to your post study documentation requirements such as applying for a work visa, opening a back account, etc.

For your benefit we have cited two common scenarios under which the two fields are usually represented on a passport

Scenario 1  Both the fields (Surname and Given Names) are populated

    For e.g. Dinesh Krishnakumar Menon

    Student’s name

    Dinesh

    Student’s father’s name

    Krishnakumar

    Student’s surname

    Menon

    Surname

    Menon

    Given Names

    Dinesh Krishnakumar

Scenario 2 Only one field is populated and the other field remains unfilled due to lack of information  For e.g. Ryan Bosco

    Student’s name

    Ryan

    Student’s father’s name

    Bosco

    Student’s surname

    Surname

    Given Names

    Ryan Bosco

Let us understand why this happens :

    •    Most families in India have a surname (while)
    •   Some families do not have a surname

In case 1, the student Dinesh has a surname: Menon

    Surname

    Menon

In case 2, the student Ryan does not have a surname

    Surname

The Impact of Missing Personal Information on Your Visa Application

As per international visa guidelines surname is a mandatory field. It simply means the field cannot be left blank.

    So, the representation of

      •   Surname
      • Given Names

will be as follows for the above referred names during visa processing

                                                         Dinesh Krishnakumar Menon

    Student’s name

    Dinesh

    Student’s father’s name

    Krishnakumar

    Student’s surname

    Menon

                                                                         Name on Passport

    1 Surname

    Menon

    2 Given Names

    Dinesh Krishnakumar

                                                                           Name on  Visa Stamp

    1 Surname

    Menon

    2 Given Names

    Dinesh Krishnakumar

                                                            Ryan Bosco

    Student’s name

    Ryan

    Student’s father’s name

    Bosco

    Student’s surname

                                                                        Name On Passport

    1 Surname

    2 Given Names

    FNU (First Name Unknown)

    Since there is no surname

    • Surname is replaced by Given Names  (Ryan Bosco)
    •   Given Names is tagged as FNU

How to Avoid FNU Issues During Visa Application?

Remember, that wrongly printed information on your passport will have to be changed through a formal application, which might take time.

If you do not have a surname on your passport, you need to update your passport promptly. You can apply for a change of name at the passport office by doing the following:

      •   Use a fresh passport application form and fill up your surname using your father’s name, apart from providing other requisite details
      • After securing university admit, ensure that the personal information on your passport aligns with the information on your visa stamp, as shown here

                                                                                          Ryan Bosco

    Student’s name

    Ryan

    Bosco

    2 Given Names

    Ryan Bosco

it is important to note here that merely aligning your personal information on your passport and visa is not enough.

You need to ensure that    :

      • The personal information on your passport matches with those on the documents that you submitted during passport application such as Aadhaar, Ration Card and Birth Certificate

    For e.g.

    Name in the birth certificate

    SUNITHA

    Name in the passport

    SUNITA

Though the name in the passport appears similar to the one in the birth certificate, it is spelled incorrectly. Such minor errors can take place due to oversight on the part of  passport processing and verification personnel. Information mismatch or incorrect representation of information  can lead to unwanted delays and problems in your study abroad application process.

Passport Check Upon Receiving an Admit

      • Ensure that your passport has adequate validity to accommodate your visa appointment and subsequent departure. It would be ideal to have  more than 12-18 months of  validity from the date of receiving admit

Passport Check Before Going for the Visa Interview

In case you have missed checking your passport upon receiving an admit ,you need to do the following :

      •  Ensure that your passport validity exceeds your visa interview date by 6 months
      • It is better to renew your passport if your validity period is less than 12 months

What You Need to Check on the Back Page of Your Passport?

Name of Father / Legal Guardian

    Name of Mother

These two self-descriptive fields need to be compared with original documents and scrutinized for name mismatch/ spelling mistakes as indicated here

Father’s name as per birth certificate

    Sachinkumar

    Father’s name on the passport

    Sachin

Mother’   name as per birth certificate

    Meena

    Mother’s name on the passport

    Meenaben

Name difference or name mismatch can lead to avoidable regulatory and compliance issues that can offset your planned study abroad schedule. You may incur loss of time and money to get your passport in order.

How to Correct the Naming Discrepancies?

There are two ways to align your personal particulars and that of your parents/guardian  on your passport with the original documents

      •  Update your passport to incorporate the naming discrepancies (or)
      •  Rectify the source documents such as birth certificate/school leaving etc.

Logistically speaking, it would be much easier to update your passport than requesting changes to the source documents.

Here is a quick recap of ‘passport due diligence’ you must do before and after you  commence your study abroad application process

Before applying for a passport :

      • Ensure that you have duly filled the First Name and Surname column in the application form in accordance to the information in the source documents (Aadhaar/Birth certificate)
      • If you do not have a  Surname, please provide your father’s name
      • Never leave the First Name and Surname blank

    Upon receiving your passport

      • Ensure that the Surname and Given Names fields are duly filled. Compare the details in the two fields with the source documents
      • Ensure that Name of Father / Guardian and Name of Mother fields are duly filled. Compare the details in the two fields with the source documents
      •  Make immediate note of any discrepancy you observe such as blank Surname, incorrect representation of Name of Father / Guardian, Name of Mother
      • Get your passport updated promptly to correct the name difference or name mismatch

    Upon Receiving University Admit

      • Assuming you have got admit from an US university, you need to check the personal information on the i20 and ensure that the information matches with the details on your passport.

    Upon Receiving the Visa Stamp

      • You need to ensure that the information on your visa stamp matches with that on your passport. You will receive the visa stamp after clearing the visa interview.

Instances That Do Not Require Passport Update

    • If the address field on your passport is not updated

It is common for people to change residence due to redevelopment or other reasons. Therefore, it is not necessary to update your passport address  to reflect your current place of stay

    •  If there is an Emigration Clearance Required (ECR ) stamp on your passport

It is ok if you have ECR stamp on your passport as long as you are not travelling to any of the Gulf nations. ECR is applicable to Gulf countries. It is basically for people with low level qualifications looking for employment opportunities in the Gulf region. Assuming you intend to study in the US , you will be able to apply for your US visa  with an ECR stamp.

To conclude, accurate information on your documents can prevent information mismatches, regulatory and compliance issues, and potential delays in your application process, ultimately ensuring a smoother journey towards your study abroad aspirations, both as a student and a future working professional.

  • The hidden pitfalls of choosing a graduate college online: expert insights from collegepond

When it comes to selecting the right college for your graduate education, it’s tempting to rely on Internet searches. While a quick search can yield a wealth of information—from student-to-teacher ratios to acceptance rates—this approach can be dangerously misleading. As expert counsellors at Collegepond, we’re here to explain why a more nuanced approach is essential for making such an informed decision

    The Illusion of Student-to-Teacher Ratios

One of the first things students often consider is the student-to-teacher ratio. A lower ratio might seem impressive, suggesting more personalized attention. However, beware—this figure can be deceptive. Many universities advertise a low student-to-teacher ratio, but this number might represent the overall department rather than your specific program. For example, the ratio in a well-funded department like engineering could be very different from that in a smaller program like humanities. Additionally, adjunct faculty members, faculty on sabbatical, or part-time faculty are sometimes included in these calculations, further skewing the numbers.

    Misleading Acceptance Rates

Acceptance rates are another factor heavily considered by students. A higher acceptance rate may give a false sense of security, especially to the international students who may believe their chances of admission are higher than they actually are. However, these rates often reflect the admission statistics for domestic students, not international applicants, leading to false hope and misguided applications. Additionally, acceptance rates may apply to the school as a whole rather than a specific program. For example, the engineering department’s acceptance rate may be publicized, but this figure can vary significantly between different engineering disciplines such as chemical, mechanical, or marine engineering, thus not providing an accurate representation.

Take the University of California, Berkeley, for instance. While it boasts an overall higher acceptance rate, international students applying to the highly competitive Computer Science program face a much lower acceptance. This illustrates the critical importance of delving deeper into program-specific data. With our extensive experience in sending students to colleges worldwide, we understand the realities of acceptance chances based on your profile and the programs you are targeting.

    The Reality Behind Employment Rates

Employment rates are a critical consideration for many students. Universities often boast high placement rates, but these figures can be misleading. They might include temporary or part-time jobs that are not necessarily in the student’s field of study. Also, at times, students find jobs on their own, and the university may not have helped them, but they still boast that all their students have jobs. This can create a false sense of job security post-graduation.

Take, for instance, New York University, where the reported 95% employment rate might cover both undergraduates and graduates, painting an inaccurate picture of job prospects for graduate students. Similarly, the University of Texas at Austin may include part-time positions in their high placement rates, failing to reflect the reality of full-time employment in specific fields. Internet searches might offer a snapshot, but they lack the depth and details necessary for making informed decisions. Imagine investing time, effort, and money into applications based on inaccurate data – only to face rejection or end up in a program that doesn’t meet your expectations. The consequences of making the wrong choice can be devastating, affecting not just your education but your entire career trajectory.

At Collegepond, we consider your academic background, career aspirations, and personal preferences, thereby providing tailored advice that an algorithm simply cannot match. Jobs and Internships Are Hard to Come By

Fresh graduates, even those from the prestigious Ivy League universities, have voiced their frustration over the diminishing availability of internships, a critical component of graduate studies that provides them with invaluable hands-on experience.

Let us understand the reasons behind the dwindling availability of internships

    • Global Economic Slowdow
The labour market at the global level is weak due to universal dip in business investment, organizational growth and hiring,
    • Local First Hiring Policies
With impending Presidential elections in the US, organizations big and small have been advised by the government to lower unemployment rate by giving preference to local talent.
    • On Campus Protest Participation
International students participating in protest rallies are not only facing disciplinary action but also being denied visa extension –thus impacting their career prospects and future in the US considerably.
    • Preference for AI skills
Fresh STEM graduates without exposure to AI skills are finding it challenging to find employment or even paid internships
    • Sponsorship Challenges
The evolving political situation in the United States has generated a sense of caution among employers and immigration consultants regarding the H-1B visa lottery system. As a result, there has been a shift towards prioritizing local talent over foreign workers, posing a significant challenge for international students seeking employment opportunities in the United States.
    • Massive Layoffs Due to Pandemic Induced Over hiring
The pandemic-fueled growth experienced by tech giants, such as Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Google, along with numerous smaller companies in the United States, resulted in an exponential demand for their products and services. In response, these organizations rapidly expanded their workforce to meet the growing market demands. However, as the pandemic eased and the global economy was hit by recession and inflation, the tech industry faced a significant slowdown, leading to a wave of layoffs as these companies restructured their operations and recalibrated their needs to align with the changing economic landscape and shifting market dynamics. It is essential to remember that these job cuts were a direct consequence of the post-pandemic recruitment spree that took place in 2021 and 2022. In anticipation of continued growth, tech organizations increased their hiring efforts, only to find that the predicted expansion did not materialize. As a result, these companies were forced to downsize their workforce, leading to widespread layoffs within the industry.
    • Covid Era Graduates Fell Short of Aligning with Industry Demands
The Covid-19 pandemic posed a formidable challenge for students pursuing their studies during the unprecedented crisis, with many graduating into a job market rife with uncertainty. The sudden shift to remote learning disrupted traditional educational structures and pedagogies, adversely impacting students’ preparation and performance. Studying during the pandemic phase not only drained students emotionally but also deprived them of the opportunity to gain in person academic training and guidance essential to excel in studies as well as interviews

Labour Market is in Balance Mode Currently

    • Sector Specific Employment Growth
Though there is unemployment due to decrease in hiring–it is industry specific as sectors like healthcare, construction and hospitality have been adding jobs aggressively.
    • AI is Increasing Demand and Employability
With the daily innovations and evolutions in AI there is a greater demand for professionals with the following skills: prompt engineer, AI ethicist, biotech AI engineer and human-machines teaming manager

    Growth Predicted for STEM Professionals

    • STEM Job Market Is Likely to Grow at a Faster Pace
While AI enhances efficiency and productivity across various tasks, it does not directly lead to the replacement of human labor. Instead, AI is reshaping job requirements, resulting in a rising demand for professionals skilled in AI.
Companies across diverse industries are integrating AI into their operations, leading to a heightened reliance on Indian STEM talent. These professionals are essential for developing and maintaining AI systems, thereby driving the science and technology workforce in the US forward.
Furthermore, there is an ongoing demand for specialized skills in niche areas such as data science, AI, climate science, and sustainable energy. As industries continue to evolve and adapt to technological advancements, the need for skilled professionals in these areas will only increase.

Astounding Rise in Enrolment as Well as Visa Application

Rise in Foreign Institutions’ Interaction with Indian Students: Universities and colleges in the US are actively engaging with Indian students through workshops and fairs to provide information about the study abroad application process and job opportunities in the US

Record Enrollment in a Given Year: There has been a significant 35% increase in enrollment in the academic year 2023-2024, with nearly 268,923 Indian students choosing to pursue higher education in the US within just one year. These insights, as revealed by the Indian Student Mobility Report, are surprising considering the challenges posed by limited job opportunities and visa sponsorships for Indian professionals.

Demand for US Visas at an All-Time High: The demand for US student visas is reaching unprecedented levels, with US Counsel General Mike Hankey anticipating an even higher demand this year compared to the 160,000 visas issued in the previous year.

Factors Driving Students to the US Amidst Uncertain Times

    • Wide Variety of Courses and Flexible Learning Choices
With over 2,000 higher education institutions in the US, Indian students have a plethora of options. While STEM fields such as computer science, data science, cybersecurity, data analysis, business analysis, and IT management have traditionally been popular among Indian students, there is now a growing demand for subjects such as humanities, business, finance, and social sciences. The US education system prioritizes applied learning over rote memorization, allowing students to pursue a variety of academic programs and specializations that align with their interests and goals.
    • Variety of Scholarships and Fellowships
In addition to a wide range of study options, students can access numerous scholarships and fellowships that help make research and studies more affordable.
    • Entrepreneurship Programs
With the current low unemployment rate, obtaining a degree from US can significantly boost career prospects for students pursuing traditional career paths. Moreover, some universities offer entrepreneurship programs that can lead to global business opportunities. Many Indian students have leveraged these programs to launch successful businesses.
    • Active University-Industry Collaboration
Most of the leading US universities have strong industry connections and dedicated placement cells. Consequently, it is common to have industry professionals as faculty members, providing students with valuable practical exposure. Companies regularly visit campuses to recruit top talent, and networking with these professionals offers students valuable insights and job opportunities for future collaboration.
    • Game Changing STEM-Optional Practical Training Combination
With a high demand for specialized skills, STEM graduates can work for three years after graduation through the US government’s Optional Practical Training (OPT) program. This allows STEM students to find job opportunities where they can leverage their OPT visa
    • Industry Focused Education
A distinguishing factor of US education is its research and innovation-focused curriculum, which aligns closely with the employable skills demanded by the job market.

Despite the challenges faced by fresh Indian graduates, America continues to be the top study destination for lakhs of Indian students, primarily due to the diversified and specialized learning paths, as well as the abundant career and growth opportunities it offers.

  • UK’s Graduate Visa Program Is Here to Stay

The UK continues to allure overseas education aspirants from India year on year due to its exclusive educational offerings, Commonwealth scholarships, and the promise of a safe and secure future beyond academics. However, this promise hinges on the graduate visa route—a student-centric immigration initiative that was under intense political scrutiny until recently.

If you are planning to study in the UK but feel unnerved by the impending regulatory changes to the visa—proposing to close the door on international students—there is good news for you. The graduate visa is here to stay!

Read on to learn about the UK graduate visa program and its impact on your career aspirations and future plans.

Graduate Visa Program or Graduate Visa Route

The Graduate Visa Program was introduced by the UK government in 2021. The visa essentially enables international students to live and work in the UK for 2 years after graduating from any UK-based university. The period is extended by a year for doctoral students.
The visa, though not extendable, is a transformative initiative that offers multi-faceted benefits:

    • UK-based companies can avail themselves of skilled foreign talent.
    • Fresh graduates can gain international exposure by working for local and international organizations in the UK over a two-year period.

    Eligibility

    • You should have pursued and completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree in UK
    • You have a valid UK student visa
    • You can apply while pursuing your studiesx

    Validity

    • Your visa validity is linked to your degree
    • You can stay in the UK for 2 years if you are a graduate
    • You can stay in the UK for 3 years if you have a doctoral degree

Visa Fees, Other Costs and Decision

    • Your visa will cost you around 90,000 INR
    • You will have to pay healthcare surcharge @1,10,000 INR per year of your stay
    • You can get a decision on your visa within eight weeks of application

The Objective of the Graduate Visa Program

The visa was introduced with a three-point agenda

    • To boost Britain’s education export by attracting 6,00,000 students by 2030
    • To provide UK based establishments with the opportunity to draw from a wider pool of highly skilled labor (and)
    • To enable international students to make a significant contribution to the British economy

The Impact of the Graduate Visa Program

There has been a surge in enrolment since the introduction of the visa, leading to a rise in housing costs, especially in London. More importantly, the visa was seen by some right-wing politicians, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as an easy immigration route to the UK. In keeping with this perspective, there were talks of abolishing the visa program altogether due to high immigration numbers, as per the latest quarterly immigration figures.

While concerns about overstretched housing and the surge in international students are real, the source of the problem lies elsewhere. The UK government’s Migration Advisory Committee has recently reported that there is no evidence of abuse of the graduate visa scheme.

Current Status of the Graduate Visa Program

Therefore, the proposal to abolish or tighten the visa program has met with strong opposition from several key cabinet ministers, education secretary foreign secretary and higher educational institutions in the UK. As a result, the prime minister has stalled his plan to scrap the Graduate visa.

What Does the Decision to Retain Graduate Visa Mean to You?

    • UK continues to remain a welcoming destination for Indian students. So, you can go ahead with your plans of studying in UK’s leading universities from the Imperial College London to University of Oxford.
    • You can avail of exclusive scholarships based on program and university selection.
    • You can study, work and live in a safe, secure, culturally and intellectually enriching environment.

With The Netherlands, France, Canada and Australia limiting their student intakes, the UK government’s decision to retain the graduate visa should serve as a silver lining for Indian student.

In the United States, it is not uncommon to transfer colleges. According to the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, an estimated 37 percent of students transferring colleges AT least once within six years! As daunting or challenging the process of transferring colleges may seem, remember that you are NOT alone and transferring colleges can beone of the most rewarding experiences of your life, when done with proper planning and guidance.

Selective colleges have an extremely high retention rate of students, so the competition for transfer spots is fierce with few openings for new applicants. Here are my inputs on whether you should consider to transfer colleges, how to strategize your list of new colleges and important tips to consider while applying for transfer.

    Why to Transfer Colleges?

There are various reasons why you may want to transfer colleges; the most obvious one being securing admission in a better ranked college. Let us delve deeper into the probable reasons as follows:

    • Upgrading to an Institution with Better Ranking or Reputation

If you are someone who aimed for your dream college in Restrictive Early Action or Early Decision and couldn’t get in during freshman year, you still have the option to transfer in your second year to a better college than your current reach or safety one. Graduating from a highly ranked and prestigious college can give a boost to your confidence and career, hence is an important reason to consider transfer.

    • Social or personal preferences

If you don’t find yourself ‘fitting in’ or the weather is too cold or the class size is too large, you may consider the idea of transferring to a college to suit your social and personal preferences. Weather, location and proximity to family, job opportunities, overall campus vibe, college size and extracurricular opportunities are some common preferences that influence the decision-making process. Find a college where you belong, that supports what you believe and where your passion meets its calling.

    • Choice of Major

During your freshman year, you may discover a new passion or interest leading you to change your major. If your current college does not offer many opportunities for the specific major you are interested in, it is better to research and transfer to a college where your major aligns better with your present and future goals. Having a strong rigorous program coupled with extensive resources like internships or research in your major, can enhance your student experience and career prospects.

    • Transition from Community College to a 4-year Institution

Many students start their educational journey at a community college and then transition to a 4-year institution to complete their bachelor’s degree. This path leads to transferring after two years of community college to an institution with a wider range of majors, minors and opportunities.

    • Saving tuition expenses

Investing in your education in the USA can be a rather costly affair. This is especially true for international students going to study abroad as also for those attending private universities or out-of-state colleges. To reduce the financial burden, transferring to a more affordable college, be it public or in-state, can be a financially savvy option. You may even transfer schools to obtain financial assistance while seeking specific scholarships or financial aid.

    Where to Transfer to?

Once you have reflected on your personal goals and preferences and evaluated your reasons for college transfer, it is imperative to start making a list of colleges. Just like you did for freshman year, research each college’s curriculum, campus environment, job placement statistics, alumni networks, tuition fees, etc. This time, you will also have to take into consideration credit transfer policies and transfer acceptance rates of colleges. If you have been rejected by a college as a first-year applicant, avoid re-applying unless something has drastically changed in your profile.

After weighing the pros and cons, flesh out a well-thought-out and balanced list of colleges (including a mix of safety, reach and target) that you would genuinely be excited to attend, especially compared to your current college. Many top colleges have transfer acceptance rates that are double or triple their freshman acceptance rates, which means statistically you have stronger chances of getting admitted as a transfer applicant as opposed to a high school applicant. While the table below showcases greater odds of admission for transfer students,it does not hold true for a lot of elite schools like Yale, Stanford and Princeton. Here are some of the top transfer-friendly colleges with their comparative freshman and transfer acceptance rates for the class of 2026*:

College Name Freshman Acceptance Rate Transfer Acceptance Rate
    Columbia University 3.74% 11.34%
    Cornell University 7.26% 13.85%
    UCLA 8.57% 24.42%
    UC Berkeley 11.40% 24.32%
    USC 12.02% 23.53%
    Emory University 11.35% 19.11%
    Dartmouth College 6.38% 7.35%
    *Statistics sourced from Forbes.com

Even though transfer acceptance rates are a useful indicator for students, they are not the only piece of the puzzle. Your chances will vary from college to college depending on the competitiveness of the program you are applying to, the availability of spots that year, and the overall applicant pool strength among other factors.

When to Transfer Colleges and How to Apply ?

The process of applying as a transfer student is quite different than the one you went through as a high-school student. Typically, transfer application deadlines are separate from freshman application deadlines and usually fall between January and April for admission in the upcoming Fall. One of the key exceptions is the University of California system. Many of their universities have deadlines in the end of November for the Fall term.

Some colleges may have a rolling admissions policy or even accept applications for Spring semester, so it is essential to keep track of the guidelines and deadlines to ensure a smooth process.

Below is a general overview of the required application materials on how to transfer colleges and how to apply:

    · Academic Achievement

Instead of focusing on high school transcripts and SAT/ACT scores, your current college transcripts will take a front seat in your transfer applications. Hence, maintaining a strong academic performance (above 3.0 GPA) is crucial and taking challenging coursework related to your intended major will earn bonus points.

    · Letters of Recommendation

Glowing letters of recommendation from your current professors or advisors will hold a lot of weight, so don’t be afraid to seek out those whom you have made an impression on. Your professors should be able to attest to your capabilities, academic

or otherwise, as well as vouch for your character and potential in your area of interest.

    · Personal Statement

Many schools may ask for your reasons for transferring, so be prepared to answer their questions. Your personal statement should explain your motives, emphasize your talents, andarticulate how the college will support your learning and professional goals. Some may also ask for a common app essay prompt.

    · Financial Aid and Scholarships

Financial aid and scholarship opportunities can vary based on your background/region and differ from those for first-year applicants. Explore the options that are available to you as a transfer student and submit your application before the specified deadlines.

Important Things to Consider Before Transferring

Though the benefits of transferring can outweigh the downsides, it is important to carefully weigh all ofthe factors before taking the plunge to invest time, money and effort towards your transfer applications. Some important points to keep in mind:

    · Transfer Credit Policies

Owing to differences in college requirements and program curriculums, it is likely that you may lose some credits in the process of transferring colleges. Check transfer agreements between colleges and understand how credits will be transferred to your new college. Look at college options where losing credit can be avoided. In case you haven’t completed sufficient coursework as desired by your new college (typically 24-30semester creditsequating to one year of full-time study) or you are losing some credit-hours due to transfer policies, you will need to take additional courses at the transfer school to fulfil your degree requirement. Make sure you understand the impact of this on your academic progress and be prepared for a slightly delayed graduation date.
