  • Facts Over Fear: What International Students Need to Know About Opportunities in the U.S.

Recent headlines about student visa revocations and SEVIS cancellations have understandably raised concerns among international students. While these situations are real, the headlines often miss the full picture. Let’s separate fact from fiction and explore how for international students who plan wisely and act strategically, the path to success in the United States not only remains open but full of opportunities.

Understanding Who Was Actually Impacted – and Why

Despite alarming headlines, most international students in the U.S. continue their education without interruption.

The recent enforcement actions primarily affected a specific subset of students who:

    • Worked off-campus without proper authorization: F-1 visa holders are restricted to on-campus employment unless they have approval for Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT). Violating this rule leads to immediate consequences, including SEVIS termination
    • Overstayed their OPT unemployment limit: OPT allows students to work after graduation, but they must secure employment within 90 days or risk losing their status. Many students  overstay their unemployment limit either by failing to report employment or struggling to find jobs within this timeframe, leading to visa violations.
    • Used questionable consultants to fabricate employment records: Some students, in an attempt to maintain their visa status, go as far as paying consultants to create fake job offers or falsify employment verification documents.

For the vast majority of international students who follow immigration regulations, their status remains secure.

Here are some actionable strategies to maintain compliance:

    • Limit work to authorized options: Stick to on-campus jobs or CPT-approved internships during your studies.
    • Explore unpaid research or teaching assistantships: Collaborating with faculty can enhance your resume while keeping you compliant with visa rules.
    • Avoid dubious consultants: If an offer seems too good to be true, it likely is – seek guidance from your university’s designated school official (DSO).
    • Understand and follow visa regulations: Familiarize yourself with the rules  governing your specific visa type and stay updated on any changes in immigration policy.

The Reality of OPT and H1B Programs

    OPT Program Stability

Despite repeated efforts to restrict or eliminate OPT, the program continues to serve as a vital bridge for international graduates to gain valuable work experience in the U.S. Since 2017, multiple attempts to scale back OPT have failed, recognizing its critical role in supplying talent to academia and high-demand industries such as technology, healthcare, and engineering. Importantly, the 24-month STEM OPT extension remains intact, offering graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields extended opportunities to build their professional careers in the U.S.

    H1B Visa Pathways

The H1B visa program remains competitive but continues to offer pathways for international talent:

    • Lottery system refinements: Recent changes tie applications to passport numbers, reducing manipulation by consultancies that previously submitted duplicate entries for candidates.
    • Employer interest: American companies actively recruit international graduates, especially in STEM fields where demand for skilled workers outpaces domestic supply.
    • Extended opportunities for STEM graduates: The STEM OPT extension allows students two additional years of work authorization before applying for an H1B visa—an advantage that has helped many secure long-term careers in the U.S.

While navigating these programs can be challenging due to high demand and limited quotas, strategic planning and leveraging available resources can significantly improve your chances of success.

Economic Cycles and Timing Your Education

While economic concerns are understandable, they should be seen in the broader context of market cycles. History reveals a reassuring pattern: downturns are often followed by periods of growth and opportunity.

2016: Post-election uncertainty under Trump administration

The political climate after the 2016 presidential election sparked widespread concern among international students about possible immigration restrictions. However, despite these fears, key programs like OPT largely remained unaffected during this period.

2017–2019: Market expansion created abundant opportunities

The U.S. economy experienced significant growth during these years, resulting in increased job opportunities across sectors such as technology, healthcare, and finance. International graduates benefited from this expansion as employers sought skilled professionals.

    2020: Pandemic-induced contraction

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered a global economic downturn, disrupting hiring trends across industries. As a result, many international students struggled to secure employment amid widespread layoffs and a sharp decline in hiring activity.

2021–2022: Strong recovery with robust job growth

In the aftermath of the pandemic-induced recession, the U.S. economy staged a robust recovery, marked by record job growth in sectors such as technology and logistics. International students graduating during this period benefited from a surge in hiring as companies ramped up recruitment efforts.

    2023–2024: Current economic slowdown

The ongoing economic downturn has led to concerns about reduced job opportunities for graduates entering the workforce now. However, historical patterns suggest that beginning your education during an economic downturn often means graduating into a recovery period when job markets are more favourable.

This cyclical pattern underscores a crucial insight for prospective students: strategically timing your education can position you advantageously for periods of economic recovery, when the demand for skilled professionals surges once again.

    Digital Presence and Visa Applications

An increasingly important aspect of the visa process is your digital footprint. The DS-160 form now requests information about your social media profiles, making your online presence part of the vetting process.

    Navigating Social Media Scrutiny

Consular officers review applicants’ social media activity for potential security risks or inconsistencies with their stated intentions for visiting the U.S. For example, posts that express strong political opinions or controversial views may raise red flags during the application process.

Best Practices for Maintaining a Professional Online Presence

    • Clean up old posts: Review your historical social media activity and delete anything that could be misinterpreted or deemed inappropriate.
    • Avoid divisive content: Refrain from posting strong political or religious views that could be seen as controversial.
    • Adjust privacy settings: Limit public visibility of personal posts while maintaining professional profiles on platforms like LinkedIn.
    • Be mindful about new posts: Ensure that your current activity aligns with your stated goals as a student or professional.

Your digital identity is increasingly viewed as an extension of your visa application—take proactive steps to ensure it reflects positively on you.

Why the U.S. Remains a Valuable Destination

Additionally, my management coursework in finance, marketing, and branding has equipped me with indispensable insights applicable to engagements with political entities, public officials, and governmental initiatives and policies.

In our final year project, our team effectively researched and formulated an eco-friendly concrete material composed of shredded rubber tires and nanosilica. We conducted a sustainability assessment to evaluate its efficacy in minimizing carbon emissions compared to conventional materials. Our findings culminated in the publication of a research paper titled “Sustainability and Cost Analysis, and the Potential of Shredded Rubber Tires with Nano Silica” in the International Journal of Scientific and Advanced Research in Technology (IJSART).

Another significant accomplishment was our team being selected as finalists for UQ FLOOD RESILIENCE 2021, hosted by The University of Queensland, Australia. During the event, we proposed the construction of wells in flood-prone rural regions to mitigate flooding, store surplus water, and generate electricity. Our patent, titled “An Automated Floodwater Regulating Multipurpose System for Harvesting Water Overflow and Simultaneous Electricity Generation,” has been officially published. Additionally, there are plans to implement this concept in rural areas of western Maharashtra.

During my management internship, I led a project at JK Cement Ltd titled “Competitive Analysis of JK Cement from a Branding Perspective in Madhya Pradesh, India.” Over the course of four months, I applied my engineering background to various business aspects. This involved conducting market surveys of cement shops using questionnaires, conducting in-depth branding analysis, and ultimately presenting the findings in a comprehensive report to the management. These experiences not only deepened my understanding of human behavior and psychology but also allowed me to refine my interpersonal and communication skills.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have engaged in a wide array of co-curricular activities that have facilitated my holistic development. Notably, I have been an active contributor on Quora, where I have authored numerous articles expressing my political perspectives. One of my articles garnered over 100,000 views and received 10,000 upvotes, reflecting its impact and resonance with the audience. Additionally, I am passionate about quizzing and have participated in collegiate debate competitions, honing my critical thinking and public speaking skills.

Moreover, I am deeply involved as a volunteer with various NGOs dedicated to providing free education to underprivileged children. I actively participate in fundraising initiatives and engage in distributing essential supplies to families affected by the pandemic, demonstrating my commitment to social welfare. I stay informed about global parliamentary politics by closely following social media channels and news publications, particularly during election campaigns. Furthermore, I seize opportunities to visit party offices and attend election rallies, where I immerse myself in the political discourse and rhetoric delivered by campaigning leaders.

As I contemplate my career aspirations, I recognize that my academic accomplishments, coupled with my dedication to social welfare and political engagement, have ignited my desire to pursue a Master’s in Public Policy and Management at _____________. I am particularly drawn to courses focusing on ___________, ________, ________, and __________. Attending a student interaction session with __________, a prominent figure in ___________, at the ___________ further fueled my interest in this field. The prospect of engaging with political leaders and delving into courses aligned with my interests solidifies my enthusiasm for pursuing this master’s program.

In summary, the words of the late Steve Jobs resonate deeply: “People who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.” I am driven by a fervent desire to enact reforms and contribute to positive change through my engagement in political and policy initiatives. I earnestly hope that the admissions committee will consider my application favorably and provide me with the opportunity to join the _____ intake.

  • How to plan your Finances for a USA F1 Visa application?

If you’ve received an admit from your dream university in the US, you should now begin your financial preparation.

In the sense, it is high time already – some aspects of financial planning ideally begin around the time you start your applications, but after you receive an admit, you absolutely cannot afford to delay this part any further.

    The reasons are two-fold:

First, you need to be able to prove to the University and the Consulate that you have the financial capability to fund your education (without having to be an immigrant)

And secondly, once your admit is confirmed and visa is stamped, you will need to actually make your fee payments and fly to pursue your degree.

In this blog, we cover different aspects of financial planning that are required for you to pursue graduate education in the US.

And we begin by talking about the i-20 application.

    Applying for the I-20

If you’re wondering what exactly is the I-20, we first answer it below:

    What is the I-20?

The Form I-20, also known as the ‘Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status’, is a crucial document provided by US schools certified by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). It is essentially your ticket as an international student approved to join a full-time academic or language program in the US. Serving as your passport to the F-1 student visa process, it details the specifics of your chosen program of study and associated expenses.

When applying for an F-1 student visa, presenting the Form I-20 is a must. This document confirms your acceptance by an SEVP-certified school and provides key program details such as start date, duration, and costs. Additionally, it’s essential for various immigration procedures like accessing benefits, maintaining visa status, or transferring to another SEVP-certified institution.

    How to apply for I-20?

In order to obtain the I-20, you need to showcase to the university that you have the necessary provisions to fund one year of your education abroad.

Yes, the university (in 98% of the cases) wants to see how you plan to fund the first year of your degree program (even if your program duration may be 18 months or 2 years).

So how do you know how much amount you need to show to the university? Well, the university will let you know.

Essentially once you receive an admit, the university will send you an email that (along with other things) will mention:

    • Tuition fees for one year
    • Living expenses for one year

Thus, the total funds that you need to show to the university is an addition of the above two figures. (At Collegepond, we call this as ‘I-20 Amount’ for the same of convenience.)

And how should you show these funds?

You can show them through a combination of:

    1. Funds in the Savings Bank Account
    2. Term Deposits or Fixed Deposits
    3. Education Loan
    4. Scholarships

For nearly every university, the above four sources of finance are acceptable. Very few universities refuse to consider education loan as a source of funds for issuing the I-20 (remember, VERY FEW).

Some universities may allow you to show stocks and mutual fund statements as well (such universities accept 50% of the current value of stocks or mutual fund investments).

However, barring these exceptions, for the most part, the four sources of funds mentioned above are valid for obtaining I-20s for the large majority of universities.

Typically, you can show funds in your name and your parents’ names (either or both). If a student is unable to showcase adequate funds in their and their parents’ names, we intervene and investigate the student’s case specifically to plan what has to be done.

What financial documentation do I need for I-20?

For showing savings account balance and fixed deposits, you can obtain a bank letter which states the amount of funds you have as on date.

For education loan, you can submit the fully sanctioned loan letter (Conditional loan sanction letters are not acceptable)

If you have received a scholarship, you can show the same through submitting the scholarship grant letter.

Once you receive the I-20, it will look like this:

    • Personal Details: This part of the I-20 covers all the basics about the student, like their name, birthdate, nationality, and that special SEVIS ID number that sets them apart.
    • Program Info: Here, you’ll find the lowdown on the academic or language program the student’s diving into – things like when it starts, when it wraps up, and how long it’s expected to run.
    • Financial Preparedness: The I-20 gives a broad picture on what it’s going to cost to complete your studies, breaking down everything from tuition to living expenses. Plus, it flags if the student’s got the cash to cover it all.
    • School Info: This section gives the information on the school itself – its name, location, and its special code in the SEVIS system.
    • SEVIS Scoop: Here’s where you’ll find the student’s digital footprint in the SEVIS database – details like when their program kicks off, what level they’re at, and if there have been any changes along the way.
    • Student Sign-Off: The student needs to go through and sign the Form I-20, showing they get what’s expected of them in the program, financially and immigration-wise, while they’re studying in the US.

Once you receive your I-20, you will have to initiate your F1 Visa application, and if you wish to know how to go about the same, you can read our thorough guide on how to apply for the F1 Visa

For the Visa, you need to prepare financial documentation that meets certain different conditions than the I-20, and we discuss all of it in the section below.

How to Prepare Finances for F1 Visa application?

The first step is to determine:

How much funds you need to show for the F1 Visa

Remember your I-20 amount? That was a fixed amount that was stated by the University. So, we know exactly what is required to show to the University to obtain the I-20.

However, when we are talking about the amount of funds that we need to show during the F1 Visa interview, it is difficult to pinpoint a number.

How much amount you show will depend on the I-20 amount and the duration of your program. And this is something that we help students determine on a case-by-case basis.

Now the next question on your mind would be –

How do I show the above amount for F1 Visa?

You can show the above amount through a combination of liquid assets which include:

    1. Savings Bank Account
    2. Fixed Deposits or Term Deposits
    3. Scholarships
    4. Education Loan
    5. Mutual Funds
    6. Stocks
    7. Other liquid assets (may include Insurance (surrender value is considered), Pension Funds (only the withdrawable amount)

You need not show all the above, however, it is advisable that you show a certain percentage of the total amount through Savings Account and Fixed Deposits.

Also, how much to show depends on the parents income as well. If the income is very high, then the VO may not be interested in liquidity. But if the parents have retired with no net inflows happening, then we need to show much more money indicating that the parents will still have a cozy retired lifestyle even after paying for the education and misc expenses.

Further, we do not recommend last-minute high-value transactions (what is a high-value transaction depends on your parents’ income. For example, if income is ₹ 12 lakhs per annum, a transaction of ₹ 2 lakhs will be considered high value, whereas if the income is ₹ 12 crores, then even a transaction of ₹ 20 lakhs won’t raise an eyebrow)

As with the I-20, it is advisable that you show the above documents in your name or your parents’ names.

Remember, property and other fixed assets are not considered valid sources of funds because they are not liquid. There is a lot of misinformation that exists online about showing property (such as land of house) – remember such fixed assets are not going to be acceptable as sources of funds.

Another thing to bear in mind is, while we have given you the above options to show funds for your F1 Visa, at times, Visa officers may not accept insurance or retirement funds as valid sources of funding. So, the right mix of how much funds to show in what category is something we advise on a student-specific basis.

Again, if the amount of funds that you are able to show falls short, we will intervene and provide advice on how you can display the required funds in an acceptable way. However, this advice is on a bespoke basis after we evaluate your specific case. If we need to show any other sponsors apart from yourself and your immediate family, you may have to get an ‘Affidavit of Support’ made (we will provide the format if you have to do this).

What should I ensure when I gather the above supporting financial documents?

There are a few things that you must bear in mind while you collect the requisite proof of financial funds:

    • Financial documents should be recent, genuine, and in English or accompanied by certified translations.
    • Statements should include the account holder’s name, account balance, currency, date, and bank seal or stamp.
    • It is advisable that you show that you hold these funds with reputable financial institutions (for instance, it is preferable that you show savings account or term deposits with nationalized banks as opposed to co-operative banks)

If you wish to know about different types of educational loans that you can avail of, you may want to refer to our write-up on education loans for foreign education.

    Sample 1

The is student who secured an admit to the Carnegie Mellon University’s Masters of Science program in Management Information Systems.

“Data is just like crude. It is valuable, but if unrefined, it cannot be used. It has to be changed into gas, plastic, chemicals, etc. to create a valuable entity that drives profitable activity; so, must data be broken down, and analysed for it to have value. Data is the new oil!” – Clive Humby

We live in an era of data explosion in which we produce and consume data faster than we can track and safeguard it. This abundance of data, coupled with lack of powerful data analysis tools, has given rise to a ‘data rich but information poor’ phenomenon. The widening gap between data and information has generated an urgent need for development of new techniques to transform these vast amounts of data into ‘golden nuggets’ of knowledge. This realization, spawned from years of my undergraduate and higher secondary studies, has motivated me to work towards becoming a veteran in the field of information systems; leading me to seek professional exposure in the domain to equip myself with the requisite skills.

A significant step towards achieving my career ambitions has been my ongoing internship as a Data Analyst at the IT solutions firm Qualsoft. Here, I am entrusted with the collection, wrangling, and mining of data to derive insights for the sales and marketing teams to make intelligent decisions. The data is usually acquired through the use of various scrapers, forms and SEO audit reports, and later saved in databases and regularly managed and updated using SQL or MongoDB. Moreover, having worked on live projects that involved wrangling and analysis of the raw data and use of various Machine Learning algorithms and Neural Networks improved my proficiency in working with Python and R. I was also engaged in developing dashboards for various companies using Tableau and Excel. Along the way, this practical experience not only improved my programming and analytical skills but also provided me with relevant work experience in a goal-oriented, time-constrained work environment.

I had another internship opportunity to work as an IT intern for Miracles Unlimited, a training service provider. I was in charge of providing assistance and coordinating with other departments to ensure that all systems were operational. This was accomplished through gathering, analysing, and storing data utilised in reports. I assisted in network security by scanning for vulnerabilities and analysing data using machine learning and deep learning algorithms to generate insights that could subsequently be utilised to make improvements to existing systems or processes. The dashboards aided in determining whether particular upgrades were feasible and within budget. I was able to strengthen my problem-solving, communication, and organisational abilities while also developing a research mindset throughout my internship.

Through the aforementioned internships, I got valuable experience in my chosen field; but, in order to advance in my profession, I would like to enhance my skill set by completing a master’s program in Information Systems After graduation, I envisage becoming a successful Analyst working for one of the major technological giants. I want to concentrate on developing models to gain greater insights and designing better and more effective storage solutions that will lead to better decision making. Eventually, I hope to work my way up the corporate ladder and become the Chief Information Officer of a technology giant.

My undergrad studies set the groundwork for my graduate studies. Data Structures & Algorithms course deepened my knowledge of core concepts of computer science.  The electives such as R Programming for Data Analytics and Principles of Data Science provided insights into the use of Python, R and various algorithms.   I also learned about the tools and approaches for handling and analysing enormous amounts of data. Applied Mathematics played an integral role in strengthening my proficiency in the use of statistics and probability in analytics. I supplemented my learnings further with a Business Analytics Nano-Degree from Udacity co-created with Tableau and Mode which whetted my interest in analytics even more. I am presently studying Business Analytics, wherein I am exploring data visualizations and tracking, to further increase my knowledge of building trends and visual models for increased efficiency in business operations.

I believe that supplementing classroom learning with hands-on projects is critical for developing a good understanding of the concepts. With this intent, I took up a course project on an ‘ASL to English Translator’. This four-person project focused on allying Deep Learning and Image Processing to aid the differently abled. It was a GUI-based python project. We used Convolutional Neural Networks and Open-CV to convert the human gesture to the corresponding character based on ASL standards. We also took numerous courses on Keras and Tensorflow which assisted us in developing a model that was accurate and efficient. We also created a dataset of 2400 photos, which helped us better grasp topics like acquiring raw data, pre-processing it, applying models, receiving feedback, and fine-tuning the model to achieve better outcomes.

Another notable academic assignment that I have undertaken is my final-year project on ‘Breast Cancer Detection and Classification’, which aims to identify, diagnose, and classify breast cancer from mammograms. For the implementation of this project,  my team members and I have allied data science and analytics with modern medicine. We used data augmentation and transfer learning approaches to overcome the problem of overfitting. Following that, we are currently performing feature extraction. We took numerous courses on the use of AI in medicine to gain specialized knowledge for this project. We also intend to develop a system that alerts a doctor if a mammogram is determined to be malignant.

On the research side, I co-authored a research paper, ‘Statistical Analysis of E-Learning’, in the International Journal of Developmental Research, which addresses the pros and cons of e-learning over traditional learning methods through a statistical approach.

I supplemented my theoretical knowledge with well-developed interpersonal skills through my involvement in a variety of collegiate activities. I attended workshops held by CodeCell and ROBOCON. In addition, I spent over two years in a crucial leadership position with the Shutterbugs, the college’s official photography and cinematography club. I covered various college events with a team of approximately 40 individuals. In this role, I have also produced after-movies for the college’s cultural and sports festivals and these videos were well appreciated and recognized. Thus, I fortified not only my technical knowledge, but also learned to work with, and lead teams; organize and manage events, and communicate effectively to complete tasks efficiently.

Given my career aspirations, I believe that pursuing a Master’s degree in Information Systems from _____________ will be a step in the right direction. The prestigious program will help me become a competent business analyst, allowing me to face the challenge of effectively managing the ever-increasing amount of data and using it for intelligent decision-making. The multi-faceted curriculum, with courses in ___________, ___________, and __________ will help me gain in-depth domain knowledge. I am also interested in taking elective courses in ___________ and ___________, as they will help me lay a solid foundation for my long-term career goals.  In addition, I will have an opportunity to study under the expert guidance of luminaries like Professor ___________, Dr. ___________ and Assistant Professor __________, and gain first-hand industry knowledge. Being a member of the ___________ club, as well as participating in various extracurricular activities and networking opportunities will allow me to develop a well-rounded personality.

I bring to the table unwavering tenacity and a strong resolve to accomplish my goals. I believe these characteristics will help me serve the university as a valuable student and alumnus. I hope the Admissions Committee finds my candidature worthy of a positive response.

    Sample 2

The following student also applied to MS in Management Information Systems at Columbia University.

FIFA World Cup 2014, the nail-biting final match between Germany and Argentina, will be etched forever in my memory. With both teams unable to score any goal, the game proceeded into extra time. Despite Lionel Messi’s flashes of brilliance throughout the tournament, Mario Gotze’s spectacular goal crowned Germany world champions. These exciting encounters are what sparked my lifelong passion for football. I regularly played fantasy football leagues with my friends. I used to research and analyze the formation of teams, the players’ strengths and weaknesses, and then determine the best fit for my team. Since most of my research was manual, it was time-consuming and sometimes inaccurate.

In my first year as an undergraduate, I created a Python script on the football transfer window dataset using the Matplotlib and NumPy libraries, which provided me with a more in-depth analysis in a matter of minutes. The results helped me win the fantasy league, which got me thinking about the wider application of analyzing data to uncover hidden insights. To quench my curiosity, I analyzed the entire transfer window of the season, which allowed me to determine the most expensive player, the most amount spent by a club, etc.

With this information, I could predict players’ ratings and stats even before they were officially published for that season. I was fascinated that using a simple Python script could help me stay ahead of others and anticipate future outcomes. Thus, my passion for football, fueled by technological tools, sparked my interest in exploring the potential of Data Science.

To gain experience in the practical application of data analysis, I undertook a research internship at the Sardar Patel Institute of Technology. I worked on a project to build a recommendation system for movies and songs based on the user’s mood. The emotions were categorized and analyzed with the intelligent search algorithm Contextual Semantic Search using sentiment and intent analysis (CSS). To generate suggestions for the users, the model predicted their ratings for movies they were yet to watch. Based on these anticipated ratings, films were then indexed and recommended to consumers. For our recommender system, I have used content-based and collaborative filtering techniques and employed a cosine similarity function to determine the similarity of films for our content-based strategy. For our collaborative filtering method, I used a matrix factorization technique and the K-nearest neighbor (KNN) algorithm to find similarities between movies.

Then I developed a music recommender system that can provide suggestions based on feature similarity with the songs according to users’ emotions. I have conducted feature engineering to process the data into a form that could be fed into the content-based filtering algorithm. The raw data extracted from Spotify was structured by preprocessing it, which included dropping duplicate songs, and engineering the data. Then, I summarized all the songs in a playlist into one vector. After retrieving the summarized vector and the non-playlist songs, I found similarities between each song in the database using cosine similarity. Then the system recommended a playlist, which redirects the user to Spotify. To evaluate the performance of the recommender system, I employed Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Percent Error (MAPE). On unseen test data, the model’s 0.68 RMSE and 19.85 MAPE indicated high accuracy. This internship taught me that adequate data preprocessing is essential for training ML models that produce more accurate output. I also learned the significance of safeguards to secure the application’s data.

Prior to this, as my third-year project, I worked on building a system for “Using Yelp restaurant business reviews.” Here, the restaurants could gain insights into their customers and services, and customers could benefit from recommended businesses. First, I used clustering techniques such as K-means and GMM to determine the most popular cuisines among customers. Then, I used various topic modeling techniques such as LDA, LSA, and Non-Negative Matrix Factorization to help businesses learn about their weak points, such as high wait times, food quality, etc. Using Collaborative and Text-based Recommender systems, more likable restaurant locations were identified based on similar user ratings and user-supplied required attributes. Working on this project taught me about different recommendation systems and semantic analysis techniques.

My above-mentioned experiences have made me desirous of gaining knowledge about cutting-edge technologies in this domain and building a successful career. To this end, I want to pursue Masters in ____________ and work as a Data Scientist in a leading data-driven tech company. Here, I will provide organizations with solutions that generate valuable data insights to understand their consumers’ behavior and needs. After obtaining significant expertise, I hope to head data science and AI research in a startup ecosystem and assist in their growth.

My undergraduate degree has built my academic foundation by imparting knowledge of applied linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics. Studying Python and Java programming developed my logical reasoning and problem-solving skills. Data analytics as a subject taught me methods of processing raw data, data visualization techniques, as well as data mining and extraction methods. Machine Learning helped me understand how to train different ML models and their application in solving real-life problems like reservation of flight tickets and hospital appointments. In addition, I completed online software engineering training from JPMC and online data analytics training from Accenture, which provided me with hands-on expertise in resolving a variety of business problems using analytics and visualization tools.

In an effort to gain exposure to the practical application of theoretical knowledge, I undertook a project to build a symptom-based COVID-19 Test Recommendation System. First, I generated a synthesized data set based on the inputs of a village’s administrator of the Physical Health Centre. Then, the data set was balanced using Random under-sampling (RUS) followed by Synthetic minority oversampling (SMOTE). Different machine learning techniques such as K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, Random Forest, Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), and Support vector machine (SVM) were used on both the synthesized and balanced data sets to classify subjects into various classes based on age, comorbidity-chronic disease, and other symptoms (cold, cough, fever, and breathlessness). Finally, the COVID-19 Test Recommended System was developed, and I integrated it with the most appropriate classification model. According to the experimental results, the final system predicted the category of a subject based on input symptoms with 100% accuracy. This project gave me exposure to many data preprocessing techniques. I am currently working on publishing my paper on my proposed system.

Apart from academics, I was actively involved in organizing and managing events in college. I led the public relations team for our college fest ‘Oculus’ and increased the crowdsourcing for multiple events, which resulted in a footfall of 10,000, almost 45% more than the previous year. I also managed the Operations team, which helped me understand event management and strategy making. Moreover, I led a group of 20 for the ‘pro-night’ event, where crowd management and handling were vital for the event’s success.

Given my career ambitions at this stage, I believe that pursuing a Master’s in __________ from ____________ would be the ideal next step in my career path. Courses such as _________, ____________, and __________ will equip me with the skills to excel in future professional endeavors. I’m in awe of Prof. __________’s work and publications in ___________, and it would be a great honor to study under his mentorship. I am also looking forward to joining the ___________, where I will expand upon my current knowledge in this field.

With a robust academic and technical background, an insatiable desire to learn new things, and a mindset to explore new possibilities, I am confident of making a valuable contribution to classroom discussion and research endeavors at the institution. If given an opportunity, I would be honored to become a shining flagbearer for ____________.

Keep in mind that both profiles – and, by extension, their motivations – are different from one another. And it is for this reason that we have presented both these profiles in their respective SOPs structurally differently.

Before we look at how to craft a compelling SOP for Mechanical Engineering, in case you want to read up on a general set of guidelines on what to include and common mistakes to avoid in the SOP, you may refer to The Ultimate Guide to Crafting an Exceptional Statement of Purpose.

Having said this, let’s explore how you can write an SOP that effectively communicates your passion for the field of Mechanical Engineering.

How to write a good SOP for Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical Engineering (ME) spans a diverse array of specializations, from robotics and thermal systems to automotive engineering and materials science. Before you begin to write your SOP, it’s essential to determine which specialization aligns best with your future goals. This is something you might want to discuss with a career counselor if you’re uncertain. However, on a general level, if you wish to gain a broad idea about the different careers you can pursue after completing a Masters in Mechanical Engineering, you can refer to our blog on Specializations under Mechanical Engineering.

With this, we finally look at a couple of sample SOPs for Mechanical Engineering graduate program applications:

    Sample 1:

This SOP is of a student who successfully applied for the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University.

Experiences change the way we perceive our lives. One such experience ignited my overarching aim to use my knowledge as a mechanical engineering student to create a positive impact on humanity. I met Pratham, a young boy with a congenital arm deformity, during a visit to the KMC hospital in Manipal. Out of curiosity, I struck up a conversation with him and his parents, and they opened up about his unique lifestyle practices and how having a prosthetic would help him lead an independent life. However, the exorbitant cost and the irony that he would soon outgrow the artificial limb, made it seem like a pipe dream. As a future mechanical engineer, I was dismayed to learn this. I knew it was my calling to seize my agency of both my purpose and mission in life – to design transformational technology that is accessible to all. As a confident step in this direction, I joined Cre-aid Labs, an IIT Bombay-incubated medical technology start-up, that specializes in 3-D printed biomedical rehabilitation devices, including prostheses and exoskeletons.

As a Product Design Intern at Creaid, my primary responsibility was to build a low-cost, modular, and functional trans-radial prosthesis. Despite remarkable advances in prosthetic technology, these devices are frequently unaffordable, and those that are more affordable lack functionality. To address this issue, I created a prosthetic that costs less than $50. The “Ultra Arm” was designed as a 3-D printed, body-powered prosthetic that allowed for shape adaptability, selectively lockable fingers, and a multi-DOF anthropomorphic thumb. It allowed amputees to perform the top twenty grips required to pursue daily activities, as opposed to a traditional body-powered prosthetic that can only perform limited functionality. Modularity was also considered in the design to preserve the prosthetic’s invariable components and replace the portions that need to be augmented. This would significantly reduce the cost of a prosthesis for a growing childlike Pratham. Later iterations of the prosthetic incorporated myoelectric sensors for its actuation and sought alternative materials and mechanisms to strengthen the design. Apart from this, I worked on the development of customizable orthotic splints for hands, fingers, and toes, which are currently administered in the market. The thermoplastic property of its intrinsic material-PLA, which becomes malleable at high temperatures-is used to fit these splints to all patients.

Cre-aid helped me apply my mechanical knowledge to create functional and marketable products and gain experience ranging from product designing to fabricating. For this reason, I now feel more equipped to use my design abilities to solve real-world problems.  It was here that I learned about the uncharted potential of meta-materials and soft robotics in the realm of assistive technology. It is highly intriguing that designers are able to extract function from their elemental materials to provide their designs with capabilities such as greater durability and lightweight. The number of ways in which these technologies could be applied to other domains seems endless, from the development of shape-morphing materials for the creation of personalized orthotics to the use of deformable auxetic materials to anthropomorphize fingers in a prosthetic. In the long run, I want to study these areas and incorporate these cutting-edge ideologies into the designs of the products I create

After learning the ropes at Cre-aid, I wanted to learn more about the commercial side of the industry and get familiar with all the components essential for occupational excellence. Consequently, I applied for a managerial role at Saint Gobain, a listed Fortune 500 company. Over the course of a year and a half as a former Management Trainee and now a Quality Improvement Engineer at Saint Gobain India, I developed technical skills in material science, statistical and analytical decision-making, quality control, and world-class manufacturing practices such as Agile and Kaizen methodology. I was responsible for process improvement and have worked with interdisciplinary departments, from raw materials to unloading of the final product.

One of my key assignments was to enhance defect detection by introducing and employing tools like compositional analysis using X-ray diffraction and petrographic thin section study coupled with data-driven statistical inferences at the industrial level to deploy faster feedback to the process. My comprehensive understanding of defect origins and quick response time helped reduce yield loss by 2%, accounting for annual savings of 1.5 million dollars. My other undertakings included an intensive study for installing variably loaded pick and place robots. Through detailed technical surveying, I proposed the specifications for a befitting robot, end-gripper design, and layout modifications for the robot, reducing the cycle time by 42%. Opportunities at Saint Gobain have diversified my knowledge and enhanced my understanding of operational excellence. I learned much about project management abilities, including how to use proactive tactics to navigate challenging projects and determine the project scope. This environment shaped me into a quick learner, which has given me sufficient self-assurance in embracing everything new.

My professional experiences and on-campus activities were bolstered and supplemented by undergraduate courses. I studied a variety of subjects that have both challenged and bolstered my passion for mechanical design and equipped me with a solid engineering foundation and a sound footing in design. Concurrently, I was working on the design of the vehicle dynamic system for Solar Mobil. This student project focused on developing a solar-powered automobile, where I could apply my academic knowledge to address real-world situations.

My ultimate goal, bolstered by the knowledge I’ve gained from these experiences, is to launch my own entrepreneurial journey and thus I’m seeking to pursue my master’s in mechanical engineering. As I started researching for graduate programs to fill the knowledge gap and learn about design concepts of robotics and architectural materials to create transformative technology, I realized the program offered by ______________ best aligns with my learning interests. I’m eager to learn from Professor ___________ after reading about his work on ____________. I also find Professor ____________’s work on ____________ to be truly inspiring. It’s incredible to see how her work on the _____________ brings together disparate subjects in an inventive way and has many promising applications to it.  Courses such as ___________ and ___________ would additionally equip me with tools to apply in the design of mechanical applications. Enrolling in ___________ is an exciting prospect because it focuses on the complete experience of product design, from market analysis to business strategy development. The non-specific nature of the courses at ____________ is ideal because it will allow me to pursue my graduate studies in an interdisciplinary manner. I believe this experience will hone my problem-solving skills and allow me to effectively leverage mechanical principles to create a tangible impact in the field of assistive technology.

I am eager to begin my learning journey at ___________ to equip myself with skills to imbue my future endeavors with passion, compassion, and innovation. As the quote goes “Everything we are is at every moment alive in us”, I am excited to bring the learnings from my diverse experience & perspectives.

    Sample 2:

This is the full-length SOP is of a student who secured an admission into the Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering program at Georgia Institute of Technology.

A life-altering opportunity to manage my father’s garment labeling factory for a few days when he was indisposed due to his hospitalization played a defining role in steering my career interests. The company specialises in design embossing on various materials like leather, polyurethane, paper, and PVC. Working with hydraulic, pneumatic press, laser, and CNC engraving machines, which gave me a chance to apply my theoretical knowledge to rectify mechanical breakdowns of the devices and reduce production downtime, intrigued me. By tuning the pressure of pneumatic cylinders and modifying the control panel, I improved the cycling time of the pneumatic press and increased production. I also integrated the cutting and embossing machines activities and reduced the labor required for the job. The day-to-day activity and challenges of completing the orders of various clients in bulk quantities further motivated me. This experience was highly enriching and inspired me to steer my career trajectory toward augmenting my knowledge in the fast-growing field of Mechanical Engineering.

Equipped with the tenacity and perseverance to excel in this field, I am confident that my previous experiences, as well as the knowledge and skillsets gained during my master’s program, will assist me in achieving my goal of working as a Mechanical Engineer in leading companies like BMW, Nissan Motor Corporation and Harley-Davidson wherein I hope to work on the design optimization and extensive analysis of different vehicle components. In the long run, I hope to scale the corporate ladder to become a senior engineer in the Research and Development department of mechanical engineering and work towards product development from its inception to production.

My undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering laid a solid foundation that I will get to build upon at graduate school. Here, I gained exposure to several courses related to the Strength of Materials, Kinematics of Machinery, Machine Design, and Additive Manufacturing. Subjects in Machine Design enabled me to learn the design of mechanical components like gears, curved beams, springs, and couplings. I learned 3D printing skills for real-world use with the help of 3D printers during practical coursework in the Additive Manufacturing lab. Advanced Manufacturing Processes, Mechanical Measurements, Metrology, and Smart Materials and Quality Engineering courses exposed me to different methods, techniques, and machines used in the industries. Also, I learned about Pneumatics and Hydraulics through Industrial Automation, how to create Electro-Pneumatic Circuits, and conduct simulations. During the COVID lockdown, I completed certification courses in CAD software like CATIA and analysis software like ANSYS from the CADD Centre to further my interest in design. Such certification courses helped develop my design knowledge for quick prototype builds.

Putting my classroom theoretical knowledge into practice, I sought opportunities to work on projects. One of these projects, Temperature Controlled Fan using Arduino, involved designing and developing a temperature-controlled fan. The main aim of this project was to create a temperature-controlled fan that can be used as a cooling unit at home or in industries. I developed the model by using components like an Arduino Uno microcontroller, temperature sensor, DC Fan, and breadboard. The temperature Sensor and LCD were connected using Arduino and coded using Arduino IDE. PWM Signals were generated from Arduino, and using a transistor; the voltage was modulated to control the fan speed.

Additionally, in my final year of undergrad, my team and I took on a project on designing and developing a solar-powered Quadcopter. This project aimed to create a quadcopter using commercially available parts such as brushless DC Motors, propellers, electronic speed controllers, and solar panels/cells. We are also planning to install a thermal imaging camera, a lift and drop mechanism, or tools that can be used for agricultural activities such as pesticide and water spraying for plants.

My internship experiences, too, have significantly influenced my decision to pursue a full-time career in Mechanical Engineering. I interned at the CADD Centre, a global network of diversified skill development centers, where I completed various projects using SolidWorks. Working on the sketching, modeling, and assembly of a brake capiler and making a tool bit rack in SolidWorks utilizing sheet metal tools, these projects introduced me to the practical application of concepts taught during my undergraduate engineering curriculum in the context of 2D sketching and 3D modeling. I also interned at Golden Laser India Pvt Ltd for one month, where I got an opportunity to work on Laser Engraving Software and CorelDraw. In this internship, I worked on various subtracts like Fabric and Vinyl. The laser machines, which were of CO2 and Galvo kinds, cut the subtracts per the client’s requirements. The setting of power and time for various procedures to maintain Laser tubes & lenses was explained and worked on in that internship.

Besides academics and university projects, I have been actively involved in extracurricular activities at my university. I have participated in the annual festival of my college, Trinity, where I had the opportunity to represent my Mechanical Department and win the Badminton competition. Being an enthusiast of learning new languages, I acquired an elementary proficiency in German to A2 Level from the Cambridge Institute of Foreign Languages. Fascinated that over 60% of German words have been derived from the Sanskrit Language, I wish to continue learning German till the C2 level. Also fond of Indian Classical Music, I have learned vocal music from Akhil Bhartiya Gandharva Maha Vidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai.

I firmly believe that pursuing graduate education is the ideal next step, given my career aspirations. Sample 1

The example here is of a student who applied for and got through to the Masters of Science in Marketing Analytics program at Imperial College London.

As a sneakerhead, I‘m a collector of iconic sneakers from various brands. But what has intrigued me in my years of following the trends that rule the sneaker world is what makes a particular footwear successful; and realised that, in addition to usual factors like comfort, look, and _______, what sets a particular footwear style above the others is the way it is marketed. This gradually saw me leaning into wanting to discover marketing aspects of fashion businesses. Drawn towards the world of marketing, I studied marketing strategies, negotiation skills, and consumer behaviour through undergrad; and supplemented this learning through an illustrious career trajectory where I got a chance to be involved in several brand campaigns and an extensive ken of product campaigns that also built my confidence further in the field. Now, with my clear vision and understanding of this industry, I am now keen to learn from the best formal erudition there is to excel in my career. To this, I wish to pursue a Master’s in Brand Marketing and Management. After completing my Master’s program, I wish to work for brands like Nike and LVMH in their marketing department to gain and contribute immensely to their product marketing and fashion business management. In the long run, I hope to apply my skills gained over the years to help advance the domestic fashion industry and consumers’ knowledge of fashion to create a richer ecosystem.

To prepare myself to meet the challenging rigours of the brand marketing industry, I started working at Superkicks as the Events and PR Head. Here, I plan and execute various events and activations like brand launch parties, mini-activations, etc. Intending to create compelling PR, I work closely with our PR agency to ensure we get the correct visibility and coverage in print and social media across all channels. For instance, quite recently, Superkicks did a collaborative event with Adidas India to launch a new silhouette dubbed the NMD_V3 at the Delhi store with a basement section specifically designed to keep these events in mind. We created a museum experience with all the older and original versions of the NMD on display and explained the history and heritage of the show. Additionally, I handled the event’s social media, invites, sponsorships, interactive activities, and getting relevant artists for the event. Managing this entire event was a great learning experience for me. I learned from an MNC like Adidas how they handle their marketing campaigns. I also learnt how to manage people and create an experience for consumers that would lead them to understand and appreciate the product coinciding directly with high sales volume. Hurdles and speedbumps were part of working on these tasks, but our cohesive team spirit helped us work well under pressure. My drive and diligence in delivering all the points delegated to me was greatly appreciated by the managers at Superkicks.

Keen to gain experience across different brands and markets, prior to Superkicks, I had joined a healthy packaged food product company, The Whole Truth. As the Curated Marketing Lead, I had to identify and acquire new accounts in targeted cities for product entry and sales in those regions. I identified some key areas with health-aware and vegan customers, like in organic food cafés, tattoo parlours, gyms, etc. Once this was decided, I worked on various marketing events at locations and online to market and sell their products. Since my team only consisted of my manager and me, I oversaw many projects by myself. For example, a memorable role I took was to guide an entire team of MBA students from SP Jain college as part of their curriculum. These 40-50 students directly reported to me, and their key task was to open as many business accounts as possible in one month. As this was exactly what I had done single-handedly over the months, I was able to impart my experience and give them advice on achieving their goals. Being my first job straight out of college, I was eager to learn and absorb as much as possible. The start-up being in its early stages, I was privileged to work directly with the CEO and learned various business facets that I would typically only get to see in bigger corporate companies.

My undergrad degree in Commerce with a specialization in Management & Marketing and a diploma in Business Management & Entrepreneurship from the Indian School of Management and Entrepreneurship (ISME) defined my career interests and helped me develop a solid conceptual knowledge base. The multifaceted curriculum included subjects such as Marketing Research and Business Communication that exposed me to key marketing concepts and communications. Subjects like Business, Management, and Entrepreneurship, which featured classes on Innovation and Entrepreneurship, International Management, and Strategic Competitive Marketing familiarized me with critical industry-relevant trends and practices.

Furthermore, I attended the Babson Build program at Babson College, a one-week entrepreneurship and marketing program where I learned various marketing techniques. We also got a chance to pitch our business idea in teams at the end of the week. My idea was to create a start-up for food packaging material from recycled waste. My research showed that the costs of making this were meager, as we easily found recyclable paper vendors throughout my city. So, we would create a vast network of restaurants, cloud kitchens etc., where we would supply these food packaging materials free of cost. We would make money by renting out the space on the food packaging materials to different brands, which would pay us to use the space on our packaging. As there would be several orders from each restaurant daily, the brands who advertise on our packaging materials would get considerable visibility from many clienteles. The learning experience of building an idea from the ground up was immense.

During my course at ISME, I was part of a mock stock market competition. With around 50 students participating, we had to understand how the stock markets work. We got information on the stocks each round and were allowed to buy or sell the stock. The rates of the stocks also fluctuated after each round, based on the previous news. The person with the most money ultimately won Rs. 1,500 worth of Reliance shares. I won this competition, came first, and was allotted a share and a certificate. This mock stock market experience gave me insight into how market trends work and shift.

While my focus has been on strengthening my business and marketing acumen, I also participated in several extracurricular activities. I was part of the intercollegiate festival committee in college, where I handled teams and contingencies for various college festivals like Malhaar, HR Fest, and Illenium. Moreover, I won an Award for Excellence for my contributions to managing and executing these events for my college. I would use these skills learnt here and would love to expand them further at your school.

After such enriching exposure, I’m keen to expand my knowledge and gain relevant skills to realize my career aspirations. The Master’s in ___________ from __________ is perfectly tailored to my needs. The rich curriculum comprising courses such as __________, __________ and ___________ will augment my knowledge in understanding the science behind fashion marketing at a deeper level and enhance my skills for a fashion marketing role in the future. Moreover, learning from renowned faculty members such as Dr. ___________ and Prof. ___________ would be a great opportunity and privilege. I would also contribute to the extracurricular activities of the University by participating in clubs such as ________ and the _______ Club.

The Admissions Committee will find in me a focused, aspiring individual seeking to make significant contributions during graduate school and beyond. I hope that the committee espouses confidence in my abilities and offers me a place in the Fall 2023 incoming class.

    Sample 2

Here’s another example of a student who went for a Masters of Science in Marketing Analytics at University of Southern California.

I fell in love with marketing at the age of eight, after seeing the Happydent chewing gum advertisement called on television. Though I didn’t know it was called marketing then, I knew I was amazed by the creativity and energy behind it. This ad was also the talk of the town – people were discussing it throughout the country. It was based on an Indian king entering his kingdom after nightfall, and his servants find a solution to light up the palace by chewing the teeth-whitening Happydent chewing gum and dangling together in a chandelier formation from the ceiling. When he enters, they smile widely so that their spectacularly white and shiny teeth act as a brightly lit chandelier! Thus Happydent lights up the entire kingdom. This wonderfully exaggerated phenomenon is etched in my brain forever. Later as years passed, I often wondered about the creative discussions behind the scenes of such expressive storytelling. This burgeoning intrigue for creativity and my collaborative problem-solving nature eventually led me to realize my desire for a Marketing career.

As a keen effort toward my ambition, I interned at Spirit Tree Delivery, a local food delivery app in Austin. I worked directly with the CEO to create social media and on-ground strategies to help differentiate Spirit Tree from its main competitors – Uber Eats and DoorDash. I helped establish a core business statement for the company and then helped create a brand guideline for all posts. I designed a strategy that positioned Spirit Tree as ‘the home of the local goodness.’ In line with that strategy, we worked on local partnership deals to solidify Spirit Tree’s uniqueness in Austin. On the creative side, as the lead intern of the marketing team, I also created various social media posts using Canva. Our biggest project was running Facebook and Instagram ads with A/B testing, assessing the quality and relevance of data obtained, and inferring the data to see what worked and what did not.

Subsequently, during my internship at CVAL Innovations, a B2B energy solutions company, I spearheaded the marketing team and worked directly with the company’s co-founder. Here, I was responsible for launching a brand identity strategy, creating drip emails for prospective clients, and curating LinkedIn content. Moreover, I analyzed landing pages and email performance data using HubSpot and sent personalized emails to the target audience – School Districts and Hotel Chains. Being the only person on the marketing team was challenging, but I learned tremendously about B2B marketing and how instrumental client relationships are. During covid, I was Branding Intern for a small start-up, Brandit. In my role with Brandit, I helped develop brand guidelines and create social media strategies for small businesses, mainly home businesses. Through this role, I gained insights into how design impacts consumer perception and how best to optimize this.

These rewarding internships have helped me chart my career path ahead, where I see myself working as a Marketing Strategist at consulting companies like Pastilla, Mindgruve, Deloitte Digital, and Publicis Groupe, where I formulate data-driven creative strategies for B2B or B2C companies that help accelerate their marketing goals. Specifically, I want to help brands realize and optimize their key objectives by aligning their service/product offerings with their messaging. In the long term, I wish to collaborate with another creative problem solver to establish my own marketing consultancy agency. The consultancy would be a creative innovation lab providing content strategy, data analysis, data visualization, UX-UI research, user management mapping, and copywriting services. To start with, I would target B2B SaaS clients and then venture out into B2C as a separate unit as I grow the scale of my company. To achieve these illustrious goals, I want to broaden my Marketing knowledge and skills through an MS in Marketing Analytics.

My undergrad education, along with the above stints, has helped me prepare for the rigors of graduate studies in Marketing. I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a major in Psychology and a minor in Business. Although I had a rough start, I was awarded University Honors for four semesters and was named in the Dean’s Honors List for three semesters. I actively took courses in the marketing domain, such as Digital Social Media Analytics, Statistics/Research Design, and Psychology of Advertising, to name a few. The amalgamation of psychology and business provided me with cognitive and analytical skills to assess consumer pain points and strategize data-driven solutions. Moreover, as an active member of the American Marketing Association, I attended various workshops – the most informative one being with the Texas Athletics Department’s marketing team. Being a reputed college football team, understanding their challenges was very informative. For example, hearing about their strategy of repurposing old fan t-shirt designs as limited-edition t-shirts blew my mind. Simple yet impactful.

After undergrad, I recently began working at “Toss the Coin” as a Content Strategist. In the last four months, I have had the opportunity to learn from some of the greatest minds in this industry. I have learned valuable skills such as content strategy, user management mapping, copywriting, project management, web research, and quality analysis for various B2B SaaS companies. My biggest win was when I was given an account to manage – Rolling Arrays Consulting Ltd, based in Singapore. Rolling Arrays creates SAP SuccessFactors add-ons, and Toss the Coin acts as their CMO office. Other than project management, I also help build messaging frameworks by identifying target consumers, creating email drip campaigns, and providing any content-related collateral help. Building and sustaining client relationships with reputed tech companies was challenging, but it has proved to be a tremendous learning experience.

Besides academics, I’m a storyteller by nature, and my extracurricular activities reflect that too. As co-captain of UT Nritya Sangam Indian Dance Troupe, I lead a team of 16 dancers. In my four years with Nritya Sangam, I have choreographed 25 dance pieces, focusing on telling modern stories through a traditional lens. Moreover, I also handled the marketing of the organization. My biggest win was when during covid, I ran a fundraising campaign solely digitally through social media and emails and raised $1710 in just five days. We established our target audience and tapped into the alumni network. As a member of the American Marketing Association’s Consulting Agency, I was a Content Manager for an insurance company called Bubble Insurance. In this role, I led a team of 3 people and foresaw the content strategy for the company’s expansion. Finally, I worked with Kori-Pati, a group of underprivileged children from India who are passionate about theatre. I channelled my inner storytelling and directed 7 street plays for them to showcase the issues they go through. I felt like I left the experience learning more from them than the other way around. These engagements have enriched me with a channel to express my creativity and really nurture my storytelling instincts.

The myriad experiences mentioned above have illuminated the career path ahead for me. I now wish to advance my knowledge through MS in Marketing Analytics from __________. The courses, including ____________ and ___________, will help prepare me for a rewarding career ahead rooted in data and fit well with my problem-solving abilities. Having worked as a B2B marketer, I am particularly excited to speak with Prof. ___________ and learn more about his insights from his various research papers on ___________. Also, I wish to proactively contribute to the ____________ and join __________.

With a proven track-record of excellence, I am confident of surpassing the expectations placed on the incoming students. I hope the Admissions Committee is convinced of my caliber, and views my application in favorable light.

    Visa Fees and Charges

In applying for a Swiss Study Permit, it’s crucial to understand the visa fees and charges associated with obtaining the necessary documentation. Here’s a breakdown to help you navigate through the costs:

    1.  Visa Application Fee:

      • When applying for your Swiss student visa, you’ll need to pay a fee to the relevant Swiss embassy or consulate. This fee typically ranges between 50 to 100 Swiss francs, depending on your nationality and the specific embassy or consulate.

    2. Migration Office Fee:

      • In addition to the visa application fee, the Migration Office of the canton processing your application will charge an additional fee. This fee amounts to CHF 95 and is for the document that entitles you to be issued with a visa.

    3. Residence Permit Fee:

      • Once you’ve arrived in Switzerland and settled in your chosen city, you’ll need to register with the local authorities. For example, in Zurich, the local registration office (Kreisbüro) will charge a fee of CHF 162 for issuing your residence permit.

It’s important to note that these fees may vary based on factors such as your nationality, the duration of your stay, and any additional services required. Therefore, it’s advisable to check with the relevant authorities or consulate for the most accurate and up-to-date fee information.

Meeting Conditions for Grant of Study/Residence Permits in Switzerland

When applying for a study or residence permit in Switzerland, certain conditions must be met to ensure eligibility. Here’s a simplified explanation of these requirements:

    1. Sufficient Funds:

    • Applicants must demonstrate proof of adequate financial resources to cover tuition fees, living expenses, health insurance, and other associated costs throughout their study program. The minimum financial requirement is approximately 21000 CHF per year. This amount may vary depending on the length of stay and the applicant’s living situation.

    2. Proof of Financial Support:

    • Acceptable documents to prove financial support include bank statements showing adequate funds, scholarship letters, personal savings or a combination of these. These documents should clearly indicate the ability to cover all expenses during the study period.

    3. Proof of Accommodation:

    • Applicants are required to provide evidence of accommodation arrangements during their stay in Switzerland. This could be in the form of a rental agreement, confirmation of university housing, or a letter from a host family.

    3. Confirmation of Tuition Fee Payment:

    • Many embassies and consulates may require proof of payment or confirmation of tuition fees for the study program. This ensures that the applicant has made arrangements to cover the educational costs.

Meeting these conditions is essential for a successful application for a study or residence permit in Switzerland. By ensuring you have the necessary financial resources and documentation in place, you can increase your chances of obtaining the permit and pursuing your academic goals in this beautiful country.

What Constitutes a Proof of Sufficient Financial Means

    Financial Documentation Required:

    • Bank statements covering the last three months (except credit card records) of the applicant.
    • If the applicant is younger than 18 years old, a working certificate and bank statement of the financial guarantor are needed.
    • Fulfillment of financial conditions is mandatory for obtaining a Switzerland student visa. Before the course begins, the applicant must demonstrate having CHF 21,000, (INR 1702671, or USD 21,466) in their own bank account. Any education loans or scholarships obtained must be disclosed.

Specific Requirements by Canton of Zurich:

The Migration Office of the Canton of Zurich demands a confirmation from a Swiss-domiciled bank stating that the applicant has access to CHF 21,000 per year, held in an account in their own name. The account must be in Swiss Francs, Euros, or US dollars, and the bank must be on the FINMA list, excluding Raiffeisen Bank.

    • Alternative Options for Guaranteeing Finances:
    • If a guarantor is unavailable, the student must confirm sufficient funds (cash or assets) in a recognized Swiss bank.
