  • A Complete Guide to Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada

Looking to work in Canada after completing your studies? Here are a few things you should know when applying for a PGWP.

If you are an international student studying in Canada, obtaining a Post Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) can be a significant milestone in your career journey. The PGWP is a valuable opportunity that allows you to gain work experience in Canada after completing your studies, which can enhance your skills, increase your employability, and potentially serve as a pathway to permanent residence in Canada.
In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the eligibility requirements, work permit visa fees, work visa application process, tips for a successful application, benefits of PGWP, its connection to the Canadian job market, and frequently asked questions to help you navigate through the process with confidence.

What is a Post Graduate Work Permit?

A Post Graduate Work Permit Canada can be described as a work permit that any international student who graduates from a program of study in Canada can apply for. With this permit, the student will be able to work for any company or organisation for as many hours as they want to in Canada.

As a rule, the validity of a PGWP Canada work permit is anywhere between eight months to three years. How the duration is determined is covered later in this article.

By securing a PGWP, you as an international student stand to benefit in the following ways:

    i) Opportunity to gain industry experience in Canada

PGWP allows you to work in Canada and gain valuable industry exposure, which can enhance your skills, knowledge, and employability. You can explore job opportunities in the Canadian job market, gain exposure to Canadian work culture, and build professional networks.

    ii) Flexibility in choosing employment

PGWP allows you to work for any employer in Canada, which gives you the flexibility to choose the type of job, industry, and location that aligns with your career goals and interests. You are not tied to a specific employer, which provides you with greater job mobility and options.

iii) Extension of stay in Canada

PGWP can also provide you with an extension of your stay in Canada, allowing you to continue living and working in Canada after completing your studies and gaining valuable work experience. This can give you more time to explore potential pathways for permanent residency in Canada, such as the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) or Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). The Canadian Experience Class (CEC) is a federal immigration program that allows international students with Canadian work experience to apply for permanent residency. By gaining Canadian work experience through PGWP, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residency under CEC, which can provide you with long-term immigration status in Canada.

    iv) Enhancement of employability

Canadian work experience gained through PGWP can significantly enhance your employability, both in Canada and internationally. Employers often value Canadian work experience, as it demonstrates your adaptability to the Canadian work environment, language proficiency, and understanding of Canadian workplace culture, which can make you a more competitive candidate in the job market.

    v) Opportunity to earn income

PGWP allows you to earn income through employment, which can help you recover the expenses incurred during your studies in Canada.

    Eligibility Requirements for PGWP

To be eligible for a PGWP, you must meet certain criteria set by the Canadian government. These include:

    i) Completion of a full-time program from a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada

You must have successfully completed a full-time program of study at a DLI in Canada. DLIs are institutions that are approved by the government of Canada to host international students.
The following is a link to verify whether your educational institution falls under the category of Designated Learning Institutions:

    DLIs include institutions such as:

    • Public post-secondary college (which includes colleges, trade or technical schools or universities, or the CEGEP in Quebec.
    • Private post-secondary school that follows the guidelines of that of public schools.
    • Private secondary or post-secondary Quebec school that will offer its students a diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP) or an attestation de spécialisation professionnelle (ASP).
    • Private school or university in Canada that is allowed to offer its students degrees.

The program of study that you have completed must have been full-time and lasted for at least 8 months. Part-time programs or programs that were completed in less than 8 months are not eligible for PGWP.
You must have obtained a degree, diploma, or certificate from a DLI as part of your program of study. This degree, diploma, or certificate must be issued by the DLI and should be for a program that is at least 8 months in duration.

ii) Maintaining valid status as a student in Canada

Throughout your studies in Canada, you must have maintained a valid student status and complied with the terms and conditions of your study permit. This includes attending classes regularly, making progress towards completing your program of study, and renewing your study permit when necessary.

iii) Meeting Health and Security Requirements

You must undergo and pass the necessary medical examinations and security checks as required by the Canadian government to ensure that you do not pose any health or security risks to Canada.

There are certain factors that could affect your eligibility for the PGWP. Some of the more prominent ones are:
    – Withdrawal from Studies
    – Changing your Program of Study
    – Transferring from one institution to other

How these factors affect a student’s eligibility for the PGWP depends on a case-specific basis. If you are someone who is keen on securing a PGWP after completing your study program, you would want to assess how these factors could affect your chances.

Duration of Validity of the Canadian Post-Graduation Work Permit

The following rules determine how long a duration the Post Graduate Work Permit could be issued to you for:

    • Program Duration was less than 8 months

You will not be eligible for PGWP

    • Program Duration was at least 8 months but less than 2 years

You will get a PGWP equivalent to the program duration. So, if your program lasted for 9 months, you will get a 9-month PGWP. If your program lasted for 16 months, you will get a 16-month PGWP.

    • Program Duration was 2 years or more

You will get a PGWP for 3 years

If you have completed more than 1 program, then you will be able to secure a PGWP which will combine the length of each program. That is, if you complete one program of 8 months duration and another of 12 months duration, you will be able to secure a PGWP of 20 months. However, each program that you complete should be:
    – Eligible for PGWP
    – At least 8 months in duration

Remember, you would not be able to secure a fresh PGWP if you already have one after completing an earlier study program.

    When to apply for PGWP?

You must apply for PGWP within 180 days (6 months) of completing your program of study. It is crucial to ensure that you submit your application before this deadline, as applications submitted after 180 days may not be accepted. Submitting your application as early as possible can also help you avoid last-minute delays or technical issues.

  • How GRE Coaching Can Help Indian Students Achieve Their Dream of Studying Abroad

The Graduate Record Examination , commonly known as the GRE, is a standardized test that assesses an individual’s skills in critical thinking, analytical writing, and quantitative reasoning. For Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education in the United States, Canada, or other countries, the GRE score is a crucial factor in gaining admission to prestigious graduate programs. However, achieving a high GRE score is no easy feat, and many students in India seek the guidance and support of GRE coaching programs to help them excel in the exam.
In this article, we will explore the importance of GRE coaching in India, the benefits of enrolling in a coaching program, and how it can help Indian students achieve their academic goals.

The Importance of GRE Coaching in India:

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of students opting to pursue higher education abroad. According to the Institute of International Education, in 2019, India was the second-largest source of international students in the United States, with over 200,000 students enrolled in various academic programs.
With the competition for admission to prestigious graduate programs becoming more intense, a high GRE score has become a critical factor in securing admission. It is not enough to have an impressive academic record or a strong resume; a high GRE score is often the differentiating factor that sets one candidate apart from others.
However, the GRE is a challenging exam that requires a thorough understanding of its format, structure, and question types. Without proper guidance and practice, students may struggle to achieve a high score, which can impact their chances of admission to their desired graduate programs.

How GRE Coaching Programs Can Help Students ?

Enrolling in a GRE coaching program can be particularly beneficial for students, who may face several challenges when preparing for the exam. Here are some of the ways that GRE coaching programs can help Indian students:

    1. Familiarity with the Exam Format: Many students may not be familiar with the format and structure of the GRE exam. GRE coaching programs can help students understand the exam’s format, question types, and scoring system, ensuring that they are adequately prepared for the exam day.

    2. External Stimulus: While one is self-motivated to excel in GRE, an external stimulus goes a long way in inspiring him/her towards accomplishing their GRE goals. It is similar to running a marathon, where the other people running with you inspire you to continue.

    3. Identifying Weak Areas: Your facilitators help you not only in identifying and working on your weak areas, which you might not even be aware of, but also help you hone your strengths to its optimum level.

    4. Customized Study Plan: Each student has their own strengths and weaknesses. GRE coaching programs can provide students with personalized study plans tailored to their individual needs. This approach ensures that students focus on areas they need to improve while also building upon their strengths.

    5. Expert Guidance: GRE coaching programs have trained professionals with expertise in the subject matter. Students can seek guidance and clarification from these experts on the exam content and strategies to perform well. The instructors can also provide valuable feedback on students’ progress and provide guidance on areas that need improvement.

    6. Improved Time Management: The GRE exam is known for being time-pressured, and students have to answer questions quickly while maintaining accuracy. GRE coaching programs can help students improve their time management skills by teaching them strategies for managing their time effectively and efficiently during the exam.

    7. Access to Study Materials: GRE coaching programs provide students with a wealth of study materials such as mock tests, study guides, and practice questions. These materials are specifically designed to help students master the exam content and provide them with a clear understanding of the exam’s structure and format.

    8. Developing Confidence: GRE coaching programs not only prepare students academically but also help them develop the confidence they need to perform well on the exam day. With the right guidance, practice, and strategies, students can become more comfortable and confident in their abilities, which can ultimately lead to better performance on the exam.

    9. Progress Mapping: Once you join a Test Prep class, periodic exams will help you in mapping your progress. On the basis of your current capabilities and areas of improvement, a roadmap is chalked out for you. This progress mapping is an essential tool for students as it allows them to track their progress and identify areas where they need to improve. It also helps them to set realistic goals and develop a plan to achieve them.

    10. Networking Opportunities: GRE coaching programs offer students an opportunity to meet other students who are preparing for the exam. This provides them with a platform to share knowledge, strategies, and experiences, which can help them learn from each other and develop a sense of community.

A good GRE score opens up a world of opportunities for students to attend top graduate schools and programs, obtain scholarships, fellowships, and grants, and secure funding for their education. Taking a diagnostic test can help students determine whether they need preparatory classes or not. Enrolling in a good test prep program can provide students with a conducive and inspiring environment, help them overcome test anxiety, and teach them effective time management methodologies.

Test prep classes also offer personalized support and guidance, practice sessions, mock tests, study materials, and access to online libraries. They help students familiarize themselves with the latest GRE questions and updates from ETS, and provide them with periodic exams and roadmaps to track their progress.

Joining a test prep class is like joining a gym. Though one might know the benefits of a healthy fitness regimen, they may not always follow it. However, enrolling in a fitness program makes it a part of one’s routine to attend. Similarly, joining a test prep class enhances students’ skill sets, improves their approach, and makes them more disciplined and competent to take the GRE.

In short, a good GRE score can open up a plethora of opportunities for students in India. Taking a diagnostic test and enrolling in a test prep program can greatly enhance their chances of achieving their goals and securing their future. With the right resources and support, students can unlock their full potential and achieve great success in their academic and professional pursuits.

  • How a GRE Practice Test can Pave the Way for a Perfect GRE Score?

As the adage goes, “practice makes perfect.” This couldn’t be truer than when preparing for the GRE as an international student, and one of the most common ways to do so is by taking multiple GRE mock tests. Taking such exams as part of your GRE preparation journey not only gives you an idea of what to expect on the actual test but also sharpens your skills and points out areas that need improvement, allowing for a focused approach to test-taking. This guide aims to give you a comprehensive understanding of how to take these mock tests, the dos and don’ts while doing so, and how they will benefit you.

    What is the GRE Examination?

Let us begin by knowing exactly what the GRE exam actually is! In its essence, the GRE is a standardized test required by many universities in the United States and other countries as part of the application process for graduate programs. Getting a perfect GRE score means proving you’ve got what it takes for grad-level studies by nailing verbal and math reasoning, plus showing off your sharp writing skills. It might sound daunting at first; however, with a proper approach to preparation, anyone can achieve this perfect score.

    How is the GRE scored?

After you complete the GRE, you’ll receive three scores: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, and Analytical Writing. Except for the Analytical Writing section, both the Quantitative Reasoning and Verbal Reasoning sections have a score scale ranging between 130 to 170 in one-point increments. The unofficial scores for both sections will appear on your computer screen immediately after completing the test.

On the other hand, the Analytical Writing section has a score range of 0-6, in half-point increments. Unlike the other two, this score will be available online about 10-15 days after you complete the GRE, along with your official scores for the other two sections. You’ll receive an email telling you to check your My GRE account once they’re available.

Based on data collected by ETS (the organization which develops and administers the GRE), the average scores for the GRE are:

    • Verbal Reasoning: 150
    • Quantitative Reasoning: 152
    • Analytical Writing: 3.6

If you prepare adequately and with the right level of focus, it is extremely easy to not just achieve the aforementioned scores but surpass them.

Why take a GRE practice test?

Now, coming to the main purpose of this article. You might be thinking at this point that preparing for such a clear-cut examination process requires you to solve problems, right? The answer is a definite no on the same. Here are some ways in which a GRE mock test can help international students such as yourself achieve the perfect GRE score:

    • Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses: As an international student, you may have strengths and weaknesses that are different from native English speakers due to differences in language and cultural background. A GRE diagnostic test can help international students identify their specific areas of strength and weakness and adjust their study plan accordingly. In the quantitative aspect, giving mock GRE tests is a great way to isolate what you need to work on, whether it be time management or accuracy.
    • Diving into a GRE practice test enables you to familiarize with the format, which is key to acing the real deal: The GRE practice test can help you become more familiar with the test format, which is essential for success on the actual test. By practicing with sample questions and timed sections, international students such as yourself can reduce test anxiety and feel more comfortable during the test.
    • Practicing Time Management: As we mentioned in the first point itself, time management is a critical skill for success in the GRE, and international students may need more practice in this area due to language barriers. For international students tackling the GRE, mastering a practice exam can be a real score booster.
    • Improving English Language Skills: The GRE can be particularly challenging for international students due to the English language requirement. Practicing through mock tests can sharpen both vocab and reading prowess – key elements in acing the exam.
    • Boosting Confidence: By taking a GRE mock test and performing well, your confidence will go up, and the test anxiety will lessen over time. Practicing repeatedly primes you to perform sharply when it counts.

    Resources for GRE Practice Tests

International students can access several types of GRE practice tests, each with its own benefits and drawbacks. The official ETS practice tests are the most authentic and reliable, as they are created by the same organization that administers the GRE. However, they can be expensive and limited in number.

Another popular option is commercial test prep materials, such as GRE books, online courses, and mobile apps. Commercial GRE preparation materials provide helpful and affordable practice; however, they may not be as closely aligned with the actual GRE test as the official materials.

Online communities, think Reddit or GRE Prep Club, and expert blogs like Magoosh’s offer a treasure trove of practice tests for the GRE preparation. Dive into these forums, and you’ll uncover a goldmine of strategies, wisdom, and support from both seasoned test-takers and professionals. However, you need to be cautious about the quality and accuracy of the information and avoid getting overwhelmed or distracted by too many opinions and perspectives.

To make it easier for you to find out where you stand, we have prepared the Collegepond GRE Diagnostic Test, which is a cost-free resource! This carefully curated test lets you pinpoint your starting point and assess how ready you are for the big day.

How to take a GRE Practice Test?

Taking a GRE practice test requires preparation and strategy to maximize your time and effort. Here are some tips on how to take a practice test effectively:

    • Choose a quiet and comfortable location with minimal distractions.
    • Use a reliable and secure internet connection.
    • Follow the test instructions and timing strictly.
    • Use scratch paper and a pencil to work out the math problems and take notes.
    • After you tackle a section, take a moment to go over your responses and the reasoning behind them; this way, you’ll pinpoint where you went wrong and what you’re already good at.
    • After each section, take a hard look at your responses to figure out what’s clicking and where you need to step up your game.

What Not to Do while giving a GRE Practice Test

There are also things that have to be avoided to make sure that the exercise is not in vain. These errors might seem obvious at first, but in our experience, they are often overlooked and committed by many students over the course of their GRE preparation:

    • Make sure not to Google the answers immediately if you don’t know them! Although it might seem like the best way to learn by addressing the doubt immediately, we would suggest you first complete the GRE mock test and then work on the doubts in one go.
    • Do not take such tests at home if you know you might be disturbed at any point. We at Collegepond have a dedicated test center where you can take the test with no distractions, so if you cannot create the necessary environment for yourself, you can always just come to us for the same!
    • Do not make half-baked attempts at these preparatory tests. Make sure that if you sit for a mock test, attempt it in its entirety to hone your attention span and mental stamina in an exhaustive setting.
  • Mastering GRE Essay Scoring: A Step-by-Step Guide

As an international student contemplating taking the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) , you may be curious about how the essays on the test are scored. The GRE is a standardized exam that numerous graduate programs employ to gauge the preparedness of applicants for advanced academic studies. One of the exam’s sections is the Analytical Writing section, which includes two assignments: the Issue task and the Argument task. Two human graders score each task on a scale of 0 to 6, in half-point increments. The final score for each task is the average of the two grades. Additionally, this article will serve as a GRE prep guide, providing valuable information on how to approach the Analytical Writing section of the exam.

Overview of the GRE essay scoring guide

The GRE essay guide for the Analytical Writing section provides a rubric that the graders use to evaluate the essays. The rubric consists of four main categories:

    1. Response to the task: This category assesses the extent to which the essay addresses the task and presents a clear position or thesis. Essays that fail to address the task or lack a clear thesis will score low in this category.
    2. Development and support: This category assesses the extent to which the essay provides strong and relevant evidence to support its position. Essays that lack sufficient evidence or fail to connect the evidence to the thesis will score low in this category.
    3. Organization: This category assesses the extent to which the essay is well-organized and easy to follow. Essays that lack clear transitions between paragraphs or fail to present a coherent argument will score low in this category.
    4. Language use and conventions: This category assesses the extent to which the essay demonstrates a command of standard written English and appropriate use of grammar and syntax. Essays that contain frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, or syntax will score low in this category.

The two graders each assign a score to the essay in each of these categories, and the final score for each essay is the average of the two scores. The overall score for the Analytical Writing section is the average of the scores for the two essays.

The GRE essay is scored on a 6-point holistic scale. Here’s what each score range means:

    • Provide little evidence of the ability to understand and analyze the argument.
    • Provide little evidence of the ability to develop an organized response.
    • Have severe and persistent errors in language and sentence structure.
    • Contain a pervasive pattern of errors in grammar, usage, or mechanics that results in incoherence.

Tips to prepare for the analytical writing section of the GRE

Here are some tips to help international students prepare for the Analytical Writing section of the GRE:

What percentile means when it comes to GMAT scores?

Percentile is a way to assess your performance in comparison to other test-takers. Let’s say you score in the 80th percentile; that means you’ve outperformed 80% of the other aspirants. Pretty impressive, right? On the other hand, scoring in the lower percentile range indicates that you didn’t perform as well as most of the candidates. So, when it comes to the GMAT, your percentile score can make or break your chances of getting into your dream school.

How is the GMAT Score calculated?

Here’s a breakdown of how the GMAT test score is calculated:

    1. The GMAT Total Score ranges from 200 to 800.
    2. The Total Score is calculated using the scores of both the Quantitative and Verbal sections.
    3. The Quantitative and Verbal section scores range from 0 to 60.
    4. The number of questions answered correctly in each section is used to calculate the raw scores for each section.
    5. The raw scores are then converted to scaled scores using a complex algorithm that takes into account the difficulty level of the questions answered correctly.
    6. The scaled scores for the Quantitative and Verbal sections are then combined to produce the Total Score.
    7. The AWA (Analytical Writing Assessment) and Integrated Reasoning sections are scored separately and do not contribute to the Total Score, but they do appear on the test taker’s score report.

Overall, the GMAT test score is a measure of a test taker’s ability to reason and analyze information in a business school setting.

    Validity of GMAT scores

The GMAT scores are valid for five years, and you can send your scores to up to five programs for free. After the test, you will receive your unofficial scores for the Verbal and Quantitative sections. You can cancel your scores if you feel that you did not perform well, but this decision must be made before you leave the test center.
